This fascinating creature was spotted in our olive tree t'other day. After some research we (Sid, Bessie & I) discovered it was a bird dropping spider & her egg sacks (which contain around 200 eggs each). By day she just chills out looking like a bird poo & by night she hangs by a thread, spreads her legs & gives off a pheromone to attract male moths, who she then captures and eats. She's fascinating & we're enjoying showing her off to anyone who enters our house (Sid & Bess are so excited by her presence). #birddroppingspider #lovenature #awe #inspiringchildren

Sadly, someone raided the hut at our usual reserve, stealing lots of vital machinery ๐Ÿ˜ข so we had a last minute change of location for our Wednesday group. I love watching the awe on little faces as they discover new areas to explore. There was lots of healthy risk taking involved in today's session which resulted in some extremely happy & satisfied tree climbers. Allowing children to climb trees helps develop their vestibular system (balance) and by standing back and watching we are demonstrating that we trust them and theyโ€™re capable of problem-solving on their own. It's so good for their self confidence. #risktakers #problemsolving #vestibularsystem #treeclimbing #forestschool #selfconfidence

I had the privilege of running a hands on professional development workshop today for the city of Greater Geelong. It's always exciting to meet people who have a passion for connecting children with nature. It seems our educators are limited in their settings by red tape & beaurocracy (fancy that ๐Ÿ™„) but have a desire to promote nature connection on a deeper level. Positive steps. #natureplay #natureplaypd #cityofgreatergeelong #natureconnection #loosepartsplay

I'm posting this after a warm shower and with a coffee in my hand....both much needed after an incredibly wet & pretty chilly morning at our Friday session. Massive shout out to the families who braved the elements. We had a shelter set up in one of the least flooded areas but it provided minimal relief from the 'rain on ya from all angles' rain. The lake was so beautiful in the rain. There's something very calming (and probably nostalgic for me, reminding me of home) about listening to the rain drops plopping in the water and the ducks singing with joy. . . . . #forestschool #natureinallweather #thankyoufortherain #flood #drysdalereserve #oceangrovenaturereserve #weneededtherain #bushplay #natureplay #naturecrafts

A bit of a different post from me today.... Today marks the 5th anniversary of losing Freddy, our son who died in my belly when I was around 15 weeks pregnant. We found out he has Down Syndrome at his 12 week scan. Sadly, he had too much fluid around his body & his heart stopped beating 3 weeks later. I asked Myalie from @silver_bear_designs to make a ring that contained some of his ashes & the absolutely stunning ring above is the result of weeks of experimenting & a whole lot of love. Funnily enough, Myalie made it on the exact day of our 12 week scan. The ashes started appearing more on the evening of Samhain (when the veil between this life & the after life is at its thinnest). They have since become less visible. Make of that what you will. In the years following I had 4 more pregnancies, one of which gave us Bessie, our beautiful (and last) offspring. I'm lucky enough to have 2 gorgeous children & will always be thankful for that. With Mothering Sunday coming up this weekend, my thoughts are with those who have suffered the loss of a child at any stage of pregnancy & beyond.

We made corn dolls today (which were actually made with raffia) and a pumpkin curry to keep in with the Autumn theme. I always try to use organic & locally bought foods (where possible) when cooking in forest school. I feel more comfortable eating this way & like to continue this ethos in our forest school sessions. A lot of the veggies I use are from @tuckerberry_hill or @farmersharvest. I also love using @myhomepantry for pretty much everything. This non spicy, simple & sugar free curry paste is one of my new favourite things. #forestschool #campfirecooking #shoplocally #organic #youarewhatyoueat #samhain #autumn #natureplay #bushplay

Samhain's come.ย  Begin this year Libation for the dead May our way be clear As the veil sheds A glimpse we do see Beyond this realm Through the eyes of history Summer's end May the sun god rest Welcome moon Lady And all of your best Let us dance and sing Be merry and free Our harvest is done And blessed we be!

The genes run deep with this little fire cracker. My father always has a pair of binoculars strapped to his eyes on a walk. Bessie wanted me to make some binoculars out of toilet rolls the other day & she's been spying birds (inside and out) since. Today was the first session of term 2 in Drysdale. We made clay toadstool houses & took an impromptu walk around the 'secret' lake. . . . #forestschool #drysdalelakes #clayoutside #term2 #birdwatching

Term 2 started in a delightful way with nature crowns (or a nest....one gorgeous boy started making a nest at Forest School & finished it at home & wanted to put it up a tree for the birds. How beautiful is he?). There were some interesting sculptures made with tools & wood off cuts & the clay was as popular as ever. #natureplay #forestschool #outsideineveryweather #naturecrowns #nests

Where did the time go? Term 1 ended yesterday & what a wonderful term it's been. We finished with a clay egg hunt & some stick bunnies made by hammering in noses, poking in wire ears and adorning with fabric & wool. Have a fab break everyone & I'll see you in term 2 (or next Wednesday for our Easter forest school session). There are a few places left in each session for term 2 but they usually fill up pretty quickly so don't forget to either book in online (link in bio) or send me a message to reserve your place ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿƒ

I could talk for a ages about the benefits of outside play for children but it's also beneficial for adults too. Often the craft activities I provide at Forest School are just as much for the adults as the children. It's important for us all to have time to step away from our busy schedule & enjoy a bit of time outside either just sitting and reflecting, playing with our children or benefiting from the meditative effect of crafting. In the case of my current Forest School families, all of the above applies in every session. #forestschool #natureplay #naturetherapy #crafttherapy #playingoutdoors #interactingwithnature #interactingwithourchildren #naturecrafts
