Some things I hear often when talking about yoga: “I’m not flexible enough.” “I don’t have time.” “I’m not spiritual enough.” “I hate yoga.” I get it. There are many reasons why people choose to not practice yoga. The practice today is presented in a variety of different ways, and I believe there is an instructor out there that resonates with you; whether it be in one way or several! Yoga is literally about breathing, and I believe anyone and everyone can do it! It isn’t meant to always be about reaching that peak pose or succeeding in folding your body into a pretzel. Sometimes, it’s just about paying attention to the way your body moves and having fun while doing it. These bodies of ours are quite funny sometimes, and when you actually observe yourself, you might discover this tool can do a multitude of things: both funny and incredible, that you’ve never seen before. When I was young - many moons before social media - I used to flip through magazines, comparing myself to the models on those shiny pages. I'd look at their perfect hair, tiny waists and thigh gaps and then look down at my chubby tummy and sob with the shame I felt for my own body. Like many young girls, I didn't recognize those models were mostly airbrushed and more importantly, I didn't understand my own unique value in the world yet. Now, we have filtered Instagram pages showing perfection past every scroll. And beyond the physical perfection, it also shows perfectly curated lives. If you find yourself stuck in the vortex of comparison (and we all do now and then), remember three things - 1. Everyone faces their own battles but you will rarely, if ever see them posted all over Instagram. 2. Photoshop/Filters are everywhere and 3. You are beautiful in all of your imperfection. What makes you different is what makes you special. Meet our featured teacher of the day: Karine Annick Having briefly dabbled into the world of Yoga many years ago, I believe that Yoga re-found me when I needed it the most. It had, and continues to have a huge impact on my life- physically, emotionally & spiritually, both on and off the mat. Inspired to share this truly amazing practice with others I immersed myself in the philosophy of Yoga and then trained to teach during a 2 year 200 hour YTT course with RYS Friends of Yoga International. Come and join us for weekly Prenatal classes on Tuesday evenings at 18:30-19:45. The classes will start on the 26th of February. The focus of this class is in supporting the preparation for labour, both physically and mentally. Through the active poses and deep relaxation techniques, you will gain a deeper and more meaningful experience of the pregnancy, birthing process, and motherhood. Each pregnancy is unique, which is why each practitioner will be treated as an individual providing personal assistance whenever needed during the class. You will learn relaxation and breathing techniques, how to connect with the baby to create a feeling of oneness, how to center yourself, and how to get more energized. Physical movements together with deep breathing will help you do the poses mindfully, with full awareness of the breath. Every class will start with a meditation session that helps you center yourself and connect with your baby. There will be a balanced flow of active practices and relaxation. The movements are rhythmic and always done pacing with the breath. This allows everyone to do the poses as it is best for their body and baby. All movements are safe and carefully designed. On the sweat drenched mat, the hot yoga practice holds us in truth. That there's only two forms of movement in the world, the precious inhale and the persevering exhale. The weight of the chest moves up and down, in and out. To gain something we have to first release something else. The toxicity must be something, we don't “get-over,” but, we go through. We push in the heat to then lay in the cold air that's breathed on our concentrated meditation. All to understand, everything that was let out in the current class was building space to take in the graceful sensation of what now can be taken in. The vows I took to spend the rest of my life with a human ended and I was left to fend for myself and a five year old little boy. I was left a single mom and totally broke. But I didn’t give up. At times I wanted to, but I had a little one watching; I had a little one depending on me and there was no way I was going to let him down. It’s been two years and I can honestly say now, as I’m healing from this, it’s been the best thing to have happened to us. Through this I’ve found my respect. I’ve found my worth. I’ve been able to show Eli what never giving up looks like. Our journey hasn’t been easy and some days it hasn’t been fun, but everyday we wake up and love each other with a fierceness I wouldn’t have known existed. Same body, two different mindsets. Before I lost 30 lbs I was literally going through the toughest area of my life, having lost power and water supply at our home for three months back in 2018, no nutrition plan on board (eating the dollar tree diet) I had lost myself truly. I really had to sit in my misery for a minute for me to make a choice. It wasn’t until we moved to Colorado that everything changed. I decided to start a new program, I didn’t have a scale staring me in the face everyday so 4 months passed before we bought one and finally weighed myself, I’d lost 30 lbs and damn near 20 inches all over my body. My mindset was shifted, I had more energy, more mental clarity, I didn’t feel bogged down with anxiety and depression, I felt like a whole new me and that is why I do what I do. I never want to go back to whoever that woman was because I am stronger than I have ever been and I am only going up from here!! Speaking my truth, unapologetically.
