What’s holding you back in life from doing the things you want to do? Today is National Handcuff Day 🔗 . . Holistic Living 365 WELLNESS WEDNESDAY . . So full disclosure: I HATE working out! My yoga is more for meditation. Mindful movements, deep breathing, restorative yoga. To me, yoga is less of a workout and more about balancing my mind, my life, & reducing my stress levels. You will rarely find me in a power flow or vinyasa based class. And as a Holistic Nutritionist, I understand that food plays a HUGE role in our health, moreso than exercise. Although, they are pretty close! However, I realized I’ve been using that as an excuse to avoid “working out”! . . If I’m working with a client who’s dealing with high blood pressure or heart conditions - “working out” may very well be taking a 30min walk each day. Studies have shown that, along with a healthy diet, that simple walk can improve things dramatically. For someone like me however, who’s a little overweight - I can clean up my diet and see good results, but at some point I have to push through my boundaries and put in a little work! . . Whatever your fitness goals are, it’s important you find something you ENJOY. If you hate running on a treadmill (or at all), don’t do it! It will be counterproductive on a physical, metabolic, & emotional level. Try new things. Find what works for you. Working out should be fun and rewarding, not meant as punishment for that burger and fries you ate at lunch! . . Another little demo from our Arm Balance Workshop on Sunday at Baja Soul Yoga! This pose is called Koundinya’s Pose. If you are new to working on Koundinyasana — you can place a block at the front of your mat and use the block to help support your shoulders. The arm balance poses can be as dangerous for the shoulders as transitioning improperly from the Plank to the Low Plank. You have to think about the actions in the Plank and Low Plank when you are working on these challenging poses. If your shoulders are rounding forward, or one shoulder is dropping low to the ground, this could easily lead to an injury. Pull your shoulder blades down your back, keep the shoulders wide, and try to externally rotate the upper arms and roll the shoulder heads back and down. Props can be really helpful tools when you are learning advanced poses that are just out of reach — but try not to let the prop become a crutch. #Repost @erinkellyart ・・・ It’s been a hot minute since I’ve worked on gaze shift pike presses. A couple months back in the UK I must have done hundreds. At the top of the handy I was perpetually falling over... I did about ten this morning and each one I nailed. It’s interesting, after a month of teaching in our YTT the foundations of pulling into our vessel. I hardly practiced inversions and my focus was more on how can I soften my practice.- - This training we hired this man to help articulate the concept of posture, coupled with the breath and married to finding a way to balance out the strength of the body that we don’t get in regular Asana practice. I started working with this man, I thought he would have me do some pulling in the gym to help my hand and shoulder but to my surprise it was all about the anatomy of my natural breath. We are working towards carrying the breath through out the whole system and circulate the breath out of this inhalation state that I’m currently living in. The practice consisted of me laying on my back and breathing. The peak posture was moving my head a millimeter to the right and left. And let me tell you it was the most intense practice I’ve had in a long time. I became the watcher. After the first hour of doing this, I was able to lock into parts of my breath that was holding onto emotional disturbances. Tears shed, not many, but I’m not one that usually has them to begin with. Anger and rage came and I sat through it.- - I left wondering what else I have been missing when I’m busy going through the motions of life. Since then, I’ve found myself in such a unique and interesting state. People talk about ones state of mind and that there are only two. Suffering and beauty. I’ve always contemplated that. And I’ve never felt that I am one or the other. To be alive in this modern world it’s a constant pendulum of ebb and flowing from one to the other. Here’s a #beautyhack I LOVE – if you apply body oils after a bath or shower they last longer. Your skin is already hydrated & so soaks up less of the oil than if you applied it to dry skin. I use @lindenleaves body oils after my nightly bath ritual. I escape every night into a bath to bliss-out. It’s part escape from the kids. 🤣 But mostly helps my body relax and unwind. Yeah, the bath is relaxing, but it benefits your sleep too. The drop in temperature that occurs afterwards signals to your body that it’s the end of the day & this further increases the release of relaxing hormones (especially melatonin). My bath essentials? Nowadays lack of stillness, tranquility, quietness is becoming a real problem. At least in big cities. At least for me. And I can see it in my own practice: tendency to move, even if to flow smoothly, it is still constant movement. And I have to make an effort to pause in a pose for quite a while. But when I do, how much the perception, the feeling of a pose, of the body in this pose (the body in general), of the practice itself changes! That's why I really like slow flow practices, when there is time to reflect, to feel, to enjoy. And still my practice (and my life) lacks stillness and serenity. When I was a kid, I purposely never did homework because I didn’t want to stand out as the smart kid.. in fact, I didn’t apply myself until I was in law school. Over the years, I learned to own my presence.. good and bad, but I recently found myself once again trying to shrink my being; it was clear to me that the person in front of me was intimidated.. and not because he didn’t know me well .. that kind of stuff takes 30 seconds to kill with love and kindness.. no.. he was intimidated by my essence to his core.. I automatically wanted him to not be uncomfortable, and so I downplayed my own being. What a disservice.. to him and me! I took away his ability to decide not to like me based on who I truly am, and instead I gave him a false version of myself. Next time I will approach with more consciousness, love and kindness... towards the other person and myself.. and not slide in to old habits. El primer chakra es nuestra raíz física, ancestral y vital. Está ubicado en la base del coxis, entre el ano y los genitales, y su función en el cuerpo se relaciona con la fortaleza de los huesos, los dientes, las uñas, el intestino, las piernas y los pies. Es la energía primordial sobre la que desarrollan los otros chakras, por lo cual su buen funcionamiento es determinante para nuestro desarrollo espiritual y el buen funcionamiento de todas las dimensiones que nos conforman. Es el primero de nuestros chakras inferiores, que son aquellos que consolidan la manifestación más individual y más gruesa de nuestro ser (la material). Nos provee la energía vital. . . Today my body just wanted to flow, nothing technical or fancy... just flow 🦋 . The physical aspect of Yoga to me is about simply asking myself what feels good and as a predominately Vinyasa practitioner, all my body wanted today was to move through transitions that roll my shoulders and wrists, create waves through my spine, and open up deep through my heart & hips! Today’s practice looked a lot more like Tai Chi than Yoga to be honest but as a somatic practice where your movements seek a profound healing, this is what Yoga embodies to me! Step outside of the shoulda woulda and coulda to truly discover your unique flow! It is when we succumb to the rhythm in our body that we connect with our true and magnificent self! Every time you step on your mat, ask yourself what you need... everyday this will change and whatever that may be, even if it’s just you standing or sitting still and breathing... honour that as your Yoga practice 🙏🏾🕉
