There's nothing quite like the summer bison rut. Watching the mighty bulls bellow and paw the earth in hopes of impressing the females is incredibly exciting. I've taken quite a few photos of the bison this summer, but lately Hayden Valley has been so foggy that I can barely see the road.
Since visibility was almost zero, I decided to pull over and wait for the fog to dissipate. With the car windows open, I could hear some bison bellowing in the distance, but couldn't yet see them. After about 30 minutes I could see a bison herd in the rising fog and turned my car in their direction. I usually drive with the windows open (just in case something exciting happens) and could hear a lot of bellowing coming from my right. I noticed two big bulls sizing each other up, their heads swinging from side to side in an intense display of dominance. Usually encounters end here, with the smaller of the bulls retreating, but that wasn't the case with these two. The big bulls started fighting and after a few minutes they pushed each other into the road. Quickly turning into a pullout, I was able to snap a few photos of their battle through the passenger-side window. The two bulls kept at it for a few more moments until the bull on the right withdrew and disappeared into the fog. It wasn't quite the photo op I was looking for, but it definitely got my blood pumping! #naturephotography #nature_perfection #naturelovers #nature #naturesbest #wild #wildlifeplanet #wildlifephotography #wildlife_perfection #yellowstone #buffalo #bison #wyoming #tatanka
