Today it is my pleasure to honor #UnSungShero, Monica Hale!
Monica Hale is a retired Dental Hygienist, a fitness coach certified through the New York City Parks Department and an overall motivation and living inspiration to her family and friends. She currently serves as team captain of her senior swim team comprised of 24 active members ranging from 55 to 96 years of age. Known as The Harlem Honeys and Bears, Monica and her team practice three days a week to compete in local and state competitions such as the Annual Empire State Senior Olympics. Last year, Monica won three gold medals at the games.
When she isn’t practicing with the team, Monica, a grandmother of 10, teaches adolescents to swim for free and participates in city outreach programs dedicated to the health, fitness and well-being of Harlem’s seniors and youth. Based on the USA swimming Foundation’s findings more than 70 percent of African Americans don’t know how to swim. As a result, Monica takes her role as team captain serious. As a former allied health professional and now public servant she believes that when you teach, you learn twice; once so the student understands and a second time for yourself. #swimming #winningwednesday #wonderfulwednesday
