Isn't it funny that our society functions in a dualistic manner? I mean for a long time people called me courageous and I never understood why because I have felt so much fear in my life. I don't think it is odd that only recently have I heard others discuss courage in the presence of fear and how liberating it is! **** We don't have to be one thing or another. We can be it all. I cannot begin to tell you how much I love this! My 84 year old grandfather passed away recently and we found this handwritten note from him today. He was raised on nutrient dense food that was not laden with toxic chemicals (Round Up and others), preservatives, and sugars. Just real food from the family farm. This way of eating is exactly how I try to feed my family. It’s about so much more than eating low carb or gluten free or sugar free. Sprout your grains, nuts, legumes and seeds. Why? You want to enjoy your food while being healthy and pretty, right? Above mentioned ingredients contain naturally occurring phytic acid, an anti-nutrient. When not neutralized, it robs your body off of its own nutrients. Yuck! How to neutralize phytic acid? Easy, peasy! Soak your grains, nuts etc. (in the picture I have organic old-fashioned oats and raw walnuts) in lukewarm pure filtered water where you add juice from one or two organic lemons depending on the amount of grains. Organic greens #sparkjoy for us. Every weekend we make a soup using 3-4 types of dark leafy greens, then onions, carrots, parsnips, celery, spices and herbs such as lovage, marjoram, fresh garlic, etc. We use bone broth and pure filtered water. As cooking oil we use one of these friendly fats: pastured butter, lard from pastured animals, ghee or coconut oil. We don't follow a strict recipe. It really depends on our mood and what is available. We hand blend it at the end. I’m really excited about my new journey in the gym. I’ve literally never lifted weights in my life 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m the type of person that would rather run 10 miles than do 10 push-ups. There’s no question all our diets should be plant heavy. TRY NEW THINGS! I have been a snowboarder my whole life. I love it and still snowboard at times. I always enjoy telling people about my skills in high school where I won 6th place at state in the park competition. ☺️ Looking back, I don't know what happened there but it was pretty fun and a huge surprise. But, lately I've been tired of sitting on my butt while strapping in, getting too little speed on cat trails and I've just wanted to learn something new! *** Even if you don't do snow sports, everyone eats. And trying new foods is so good for us. Diversity in the diet helps feed healthy bacteria diversity. It also helps support local farming, especially if you are eating a year round diverse diet that changes with the seasons. Don't take LOVE for granted. . One of the good things that this life has reminded me constantly is: Don’t take the one you love for granted. (or in any case, the people you love) . If most of the time, you are blessed enough to be with the person you love and aren’t constantly separated by a rigorous work schedule, distance, travel or other commitments on a regular basis, you may get used to them always being around or there when you need them or want them most... or used to them not being around. . This life has reminded me time and time again: To live in the present moment. Make the most of the time we do have together. Don’t waste time. Live life to the fullest. Keep our priorities straight. And to make sure he knows I love him. . Sometimes LOVE relationships are associated with weakness, dependence, loss of identity or freedom. Or we become callous to even the idea of it. I know at times, before I met Eric, I questioned even the existence of it. However, I think LOVE relationships are a reflection of strength, independence, helpful in discovering and developing our own identity, passion, and a clear example of freedom. . Loving relationships are beautiful because they show the desire, willingness and capacity humans have to freely choose to love and care about something. . Marriage is a symbol of LOVE. . It is both the easiest thing and the hardest thing. It’s a process not a destination. . Because of LOVE, Eric and I wanted to be married to each other. At our wedding, we asked one another to enter into a covenant. A sacred union. To be committed to each other through all of life, for the rest of our life. Flower Essences for the Chakras. Thank you @adrienneleejoywork for planting this seed and inspiring the creation. {Saturated Fats} These things sure get a bad rap (and have for years!) and the ones that get the worst of it aren’t even pictured here (🐖👈🏻lard,🐂👈🏻 tallow, 🦆👈🏻 duck fat). Fats from animals (saturated), and vegetables like avocado/olive oil/coconut oil (unsaturated) are building blocks for our cell membranes. They also help regulate our hormone production! Fats have the unique ability to slow down nutrient absorption and keep us feeling full longer. They also time-release the sugars from foods when consumed together. For example, whenever I give my kids a piece of fruit 🍎🍌🥝 I always pair it with a fat and protein to slow that sugar surge down and help the snack carry them longer. 💚 On top of all of this, these fats are like vehicles 🛵 for the ever-important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. These fats are essential in converting carotene to vitamin A in the body and absorbing minerals from food ...among other things. 💚 So it’s like this: You’re eating a delicious fruit salad. It’s organic, it’s sweet, it’s making you smile. 😇 But there is no fat (good fat!) anywhere in sight! Or, you’re having a wonderfully made salad with leafy greens and a variety of colored veggies (HIGH FIVE ✋🏻) and you’re patting yourself on the back for making such good food choices! You just squeezed half a lemon on it to ditch the dressing (✋🏻✋🏻) But there is no fat! All of those wonderful vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and just plain good-for-you nutrients are not being absorbed by the body because they need some fat to be their carrier to your cells! 💚 I know you want those vitamins and minerals because otherwise you wouldn’t be eating those leafy greens so give them the fat they deserve - and you deserve! Not surprising, yet happy to see scientific attention to this topic... on Tuesday, a peer reviewed article titled “Organic diet intervention significantly reduces urinary pesticide levels in U.S. children and adults” was published in Environmental Research. . According to the study the objective was: To investigate the impact of an organic diet intervention on levels of insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides or their metabolites in urine collected from adults and children. . The conclusion stated: An organic diet was associated with significant reductions in urinary excretion of several pesticide metabolites and parent compounds. This study adds to a growing body of literature indicating that an organic diet may reduce exposure to a range of pesticides in children and adults. Additional research is needed to evaluate dietary exposure to neonicotinoids, which are now the most widely used class of insecticides in the world. . This research confirms similar information as other studies conducted in the past. It’s important because it can bring to light what might otherwise be invisible to a consumer. #youarewhatyoueat . I usually stick to my normal rotation of places when I travel (Chipotle, Jason's Deli and whatever local Vietnamese pho I can find) but it's hard to say no to gumbo when you're in New Orleans... Why is it that people get so annoyed with folks who talk about food? Gluten-free, paleo, vegan, whatever. Why do so many people hate on these conversations? . . Is it because if someone is changing their lifestyle it makes others uncomfortable? Is it just annoying to hear about something you’re not interested in? Is it that there is an underlying pressure to join the movement? Is there judgement if you don’t? Is it that we are just all too sensitive these days? What’s the deal? . . I think there are probably a lot of factors going into why people get annoyed with others who talk about their diet and lifestyles. But I also think compassion is lacking in these conversations. . . People who are striving for health are finding passions and struggles connected to the foods they are eating. Especially those who have a medical reason to change. And to be annoyed with friends who are just sharing life with you is a bit insensitive. Community is about sharing and doing life together. So especially for those who are trying to do good for their bodies, shouldn’t we strive to support them? . . Forget the judgement (from all angles!) and forget the selfish tendencies. Just do life with people. Build each other up. Support each other. Be in community. And eat food that makes you feel good, whatever that means to you. . . Rant over. . . This month is my birth month. Ever since I did GAPS Intro for the first time 3 years ago, I have done it every February to treat myself. Yes, you heard me correctly. I didn’t like mustard until I started eating this: Grass fed uncured beef sausage (sometimes I use organ grind sausage from US Wellness Meats) topped with slightly warmed (so it doesn’t kill the beneficial bacteria) homemade sauerkraut (this one had cabbage and cauliflower), @primalkitchenfoods brown mustard and some parsley. “This might be weird...but I just wanted to thank you for being open about your journey with Nourishing Traditions. I've searched my entire life for this style of food system. When I read your posts I was like "This girl is crazy. Meat is good? Raw dairy? No way. Raw vegetables now that's what's healthy." I've been a wishy washy vegan for 5 years and with your birth story I checked out Sally Fallon and the Weston A Price Foundation. Now I'm ALL IN. It's been a month and we're on the GAPS protocol with Nourishing Traditions as our end goal. We get our meat and raw dairy from a local farmer. I'm making my own yogurt and kefir. Kombucha. Sauerkraut. And I feel SO much better. My 2 young children as starting to do better too. I have found that you get a lot of back lash with this lifestyle because it's 100% not what main stream media wants you to believe. So thank you for going against the grain and sharing your story despite that...because here's 1 family that is healing because of it.” . . I don't know if the threat of snow scared people away or what, but we had only a modest turnout for out @westonaprice potluck on Friday. What we did have was a perfect balance of #wisetraditions foods! Meatballs with duck liver in bone broth, chicken sausage with onions, raw milk yogurt dip, green salad with olive oil and balsamic dressing, sauerkraut, quinoa "fried rice" with pastured eggs, and grassfed whipped cream and organic blueberries. I’m heading to a friend’s home for brunch this morning. I made this sheet pan veggie hash and some bone broth to bring. . . The veggies are so easy! The only thing to keep in mind is that they will cook at different durations. So here is what you do! . . V E G G I E * H A S H - Preheat the oven to 400f. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper (it make clean up easier and allows the veggies to crisp up.) - Mix your fat (ghee, lard, coconut oil, butter and olive oil, etc...) with your spices (whatever you like.) - Spread the hard veggies on the tray and toss with some of the fat/spices mix. Theses are veggies like, diced sweet potatoes, regular potatoes (make sure you rinse them a few times to remove the extra starch), harder squashes, carrots, beets, etc... Bake until starting to soften. - Next toss the medium hard veggies with the fat/spice mix and add them to the sheet pan. These are things like, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, summer squash, Brussels sprouts, peppers, etc... Bake these until they are soft. - At the very end toss the greens with the last of the fat/spice mix and add them to the sheet pan, lay them on top of everything else. These are veggies like, kale, chard, cabbage, etc... Return the tray to the oven and let it bake for a few minutes until it crisps up. Then mix it all together. - Top it all off with some sunflower seeds and avocado! . . This is something you can make on the weekend and eat all week! Add it to an omelet, salad, or soup. Breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner! KETO SANDWICH with TURKEY LIVERWURST…even though I’m not “Keto”—meaning super low carb—I am always watching my processed carb intake. These are egg-based low carb buns that we love from @foxhillkitchens. They’re called Awesome Bunz😜! - People eat far too many flour-based foods today. If you want to promise yourself an easier time achieving a healthy weight, and at least a decade more in your life on this earth, you’ll want to reconsider how much bread and pasta and flour-based food you’re consuming daily. - I am so so so so happy we found this turkey liverwurst from @wellshire farms. We haven’t been able to find a way to get liver into our diets regularly enough, until now. Liver is one of the most nutrient-dense foods on earth and our body is really craving those mad vitamins. I focus on liver from cows, lamb, chicken, or turkey. I try to avoid pork liver just because it carries more pathogens than any other animal source, and it’s usually mixed with pork fat which stores a lot of toxins. We love to snack on this liverwurst with @simplemills crackers, and my husband mixes his with mayo because it reminds him of his childhood. - P.S. 🗣Contrary to conventional beliefs, you’re not consuming the toxins when you consume liver. The liver contains all of the enzymes and nutrients needed to process toxins, but doesn’t store toxins. I 💚 brazil nuts. Seriously they are SO good. I feel like they’re the red-headed step child in the nut family since almonds, pecans and cashews tend to get all the love these days. They shouldn’t be though. 💚 How do you sleep at night? These nuts are rich in selenium. A deficiency in selenium can account for sleep abnormalities. Yup! So brazil nuts are the “good sleep” nut. They help boost serotonin which can help you get the happy zzzzz’s at night. 😴👍🏻 But they just keep getting better...
