Let’s play “good window vs bad window” for a moment - this storefront isn’t perfect but it’s a wonderful example of how bird strike prevention can be beautiful, and engaging. Video clip is upsetting, and kind of typical: these structures were not built with birds in mind. There are commercially available products that can help, @americanbirdconservancy has a thorough list! And it’s my jam to help guide architects, business owners, and people affiliated with windows to make the world a more live-birdy-place. . . . #fixyourwindows #justsavebirds #deadbirds #birdscantseeglass #thinkofthebirds #windowart #decorateyourwindows #windowart #storefrontart #handpaintedwindow #greendesign #sustainabledesign #greenarchitecture #sustainablearchitecture #wildlifeconservation #birdconservation #deadbirds4science #lookaroundyou #savethebirds #DIYwindows #DIYactivism

Orcas - Georgia Straight, BC, Canada. TBT! This picture is from a few years ago, when we were sailing around the Golf Islands between Vancouver and Victoria. There has been some orcas in Vancouver harbour this past week, swimming under the Lions Gate bridge all the way to Deep cove... Hopefully, they will come around this weekend when I get a chance to sit by the water all day!! #orca #killerwhale #whale #wildlife #wildlifeconservation #vancouverisawesome #britishcolumbia #canada #georgiastraight #pacificocean #pnw #westerncanada #nature #naturelovers #family #nikon #tbt #throwbackthursday

Happy World Penguin Day! I have the pleasure of working with this beautiful colony of African penguins! They’re some of my favorite birds I get to work with, and they each have their own adorable personalities! I love them so much! Did you know that African penguins are endangered for a few different reasons? Harvesting for eggs and guano have destroyed nesting sites and caused penguins to look for other sites where they are more susceptible to overheating from the sun, they’re more vulnerable to predations, and their sites are more likely to flood. They’re also affected by oil spills. African penguins have natural oils on their feathers that help them regulate their body temperature in and out of the water. Oil from oil spills breaks down this natural oil and prevents the penguins from being able to thermoregulate, leaving them susceptible to hypothermia. Lastly, their biggest threat is probably commercial fishing. Overfishing has become a big environmental issue. As we continue to catch fish faster than they can reproduce, we’re reducing prey populations of many animals like the African penguin. As they swim out to find food for themselves and their chicks, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to catch enough prey to eat. As a result, many penguins, especially the chicks, are starving to death. It’s estimated that there are only about 50,000 African penguins left in the wild. If we don’t change what we’re doing, we may lose this species forever. #penguin #africanpenguin #worldpenguinday #wildlife #conservation #wildlifeconservation #savethepenguins #zookeeper

“Sustainability to me means that our collective demands on a system (social, environmental or economic) never exceed what that system fundamentally needs to maintain its basic operations or functions.” 🌱🌎 —— Our upcoming post highlights an in-depth interview with Rylan Dobson behind Sustainability and specifically Water Stewardship, another growing concern posed as a global issue 📝 —— Learn what water stewardship is, while gaining insight into Rylan’s experiences to see how you can get involved to make changes for our environment and future generations 👶 —— A lot of us may not know the extent of how scarce water is as a resource and with climate change, this poses to change drastically further. Which is why it is essential for us to come together to learn about these topics from those who are experts, share it with others, and contribute once we have learnt and know how we can make an impact 🙏🏽 —— Learn ~ Share ~ Change at Vancouver, British Columbia

A selfie before bed in my tent out on the sea ice in the Ross Sea, Antarctica whilst on assignment for National Geographic filming emperor penguins. In spring/summer the sun never sets and despite the solar radiation the temperature drops to 20 below, but honestly I’ve never slept so well in my life. This is such an incredible place, such a privilege to be given permission to film here. Rutting bucks are on another level when you have the bow in hand, the last 6 days felt like it had it all. Many close calls, wind changes, sneaky does, hidden boars, fast setting darkness, crunching terrain with no shooting lanes. Unforgettable experiences and great lessons learnt, I'll say this is my first true fallow deer rut being so close as to hear the heavy breathing inbetween croaks in dense shurbs and trees yet not find an opening before nightfall only scratches the surface of this hunt camp, I didn't get a deer down but that's not what it's all about, the people, the effort, the disconnection from modern society, the connection to nature, the struggles, the pursuit, the failure, the comradery, the laughs and the list goes on... thank you hunt camp.

Pilbara Grasswren, 13-02-2019, Mount Nameless / Tom Price / The Pilbara / WA / 🇦🇺 Restricted to the red ironstone hills of The Pilbara region, I racked up some serious kms trying to find this tricky species. When I eventually got onto some I found them near impossible to photograph. I was pretty stoked in the end to spend half an hour watching a family group and manage this pretty dodgy photo 🤪 #wildlifephotography #wildlifeseekers #wildlifephotographer #wildlifeconservation #conservation #biodiversity #animalsofinstagram #nature #naturephotography #instabird #naturelovers #wildlifelovers #wildlifeplanet #wildplanet #instanature #birdsofaustralia #birdwatching #birding #birds #bird #australianbirds #birdphotography #birdlife #birdlovers #grasswren #pilbaragrasswren at Tom Price, Western Australia

Posted @withrepost@action4ifaw There are less than 7,000 snow leopards in the wild today. In fact, 80% of wild cat species are experiencing population decline due to threats like poaching, abduction from the wild for the exotic pet trade, habitat loss, and retaliatory killings from conflict with humans. These predators are guardians of their ecosystems and, if conserved appropriately, protect the health and species of their corresponding landscapes. Luckily, snow leopards and most other big cats are listed under the Endangered Species Act, an indispensable environmental law which protects them from over-exploitation and, ultimately, extinction. We advocate for this law because saving species from extinction is more than just preserving iconic wildlife for generations to come—it's about protecting integral parts of the ecosystem that provides the air we breathe, the water we drink, the landscapes we admire, and the medicine we need. - © Kerry Boytell . . . . . #peopleandplanet #endangeredspecies #endangeredspeciesact #savebigcats #snowleopard #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #animals_in_world #protectnature #wildlifelovers #wildlifeonearth #bigcatphotography #wildplanet

Species we hunted nearly to extinction in the 19th century but managed to bring back! The Wood Duck lives in wooded swamps, shallow lakes, marshes or ponds. It eats berries, acorns, seeds but also insects, which makes it omnivorous. It has sharp claws for perching in trees. Wood Ducks, in southern regions, produce two broods in a single season - the only North American duck that can do so! After hatching, the Wood Duck ducklings jump down from the nest tree and make their way to water. The ducklings may jump from heights of up to 290 ft without injury 😳. They prefer nesting over water so the young have a soft landing 😊. Little and large; a young elephant‘s ‘baby tusks’ in contrast to the adult’s mature tusks ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Both male and female African elephants have tusks, which are actually elongated incisor teeth. One third of the tusk is hidden from view, embedded deep in the elephant’s head. Although tusks are present at birth, the ’baby tusks’ fall out after a year, and permanent ones replace them. These tusks will continue to grow throughout the elephant’s life. Some old elephant bulls display enormous tusks, however their average size has decreased over the past hundred years and due to hunting and ivory poaching, the ‘big tusk gene’ is becoming rare. Elephant’s use their tusks for a wide range of activities including; digging, foraging and fighting and at times, they also act as a resting place for the elephant’s very heavy trunk. Evidence suggests that elephants normally prefer one tusk over the other, similar to being left or right handed in humans, the preferred tusk is known as the master tusk. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #tusks #elephants #africanelephants #elephantcalf #wildelephants #wildafrica #elephantphotography #elephantsofinstagram #africanwildlifephotography #loveelephants #elephantlover #animalsofafrica #africanwildlife #majesticwildlife #nature #wildlife #wildlifeplanet #wildlifeaddicts #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #conservationphotography #elephantconservation #jointheherd #saveelephants #stoppoaching #elephantday #maasaimara #riftvalley #amboselinationalpark #kenya at Amboseli National Park
