@Regrann from @stevewinterphoto: @natgeo @stevewinterphoto Here is a rare image of a Sumatran tiger. The only tiger with a mane. Tigers are an endangered species that need our help in a big way! There may be fewer than 3500 individuals left in the wild and scientists believe breeding populations occur in only eight countries and 40 population strongholds across Asia! My tiger work for @natgeo magazine over the past 20 years has taken me to document tigers in places as wild as Kaziranga National Park in India and northern Sumatra in Indonesia and I see the same threats facing this iconic species: poaching, deforestation and an increasing body part trade in China! When the demand for wild and captive tiger parts stops so too will the poaching of this beautiful cat! #wildaid Check out my Nat Geo Tiger book - "Tigers Forever” written by my wife Sharon Guynup who is a Global Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington DC. http://www.tigersforeverbook.com We need to unite in saving this iconic big cat that is an ambassador of wild places and human cultures! Tigers are also the most important apex predators in forests across Eurasia and when you lose them from a forest, deer and pig numbers can increase and the forest loses an important ecosystem engineer! Check out Marine Ecology Progress Series for our comment on the latest population estimate for white sharks in South Africa. Estimating population size for any marine species is no simple task. We've learned this lesson time and again in South Africa, the US and Australia, where attempts have been made in the past to answer just how many white sharks are swimming in national waters. Several lessons have emerged from these attempts, namely, again that accomplishing this goal is not easy, but also that we have an important duty as scientists to be aware of any uncertainty in our results, and ensure that we communicate this uncertainty in our findings. It can be a difficult pill to swallow. There is a substantial amount of accomplishment involved in protecting an animal and this creates an incentive for conservationists to fight for listing animals on endangered species lists. These accomplishments, however come at a cost. A critical component of conservation is that the limited resources available are used efficiently and effectively for the species most in need. We asked the authors of a recent population estimate to clarify some uncertainties we identified in their work, in an attempt to ensure that the research outputs of the scientific community in South Africa use the best available data and methods with full disclosure of any limitations so that any resulting management decisions are supported by sound scientific knowledge.

A Sumatran elephant feeds quiet on the river bank, Leuser Ecosystem, Indonesia. We have ordered two collars from the United States, and we'll be fitting them on two different herds of elephants. Allowing us to understand the herds movements and helping is with the science. With 6 GPS download locations a day, this will allow our Ranger patrol to be in a place to prevent any human elephant conflicts from happening. But we still need to raise funds to get more elephant patrol units into the field. Help us directly with a contribution to our Forest & Elephant patrols! @Regrann from @paulhiltonphoto - Illegal logging is rampant within the Leuser Ecosystem, for palm oil expansion and road projects threatening the last wild areas within the system. Recently the FKL rangers managed to infiltrate a logging Mafia that is behind the house hold destruction of the lowland forests, prime elephant territory and made several arrests. Sentencing the loggers to anywhere from 6 months to two years. Please Learn more about this important ecosystem, tell your friends - JOIN & SHARE the movement!https://www.lovetheleuser.org . The human urge is to contain, dominate, control, and zoos encapsulate this. Animals kept in zoos are denied everything that makes their lives. They’re never happy. They never settle down … you can see it in their eyes. Their spirits are broken. #racingextinction #jointheherd #elephants #conservation #wildlife #wildaid #elephant #savethewildlife #stoppoaching #stopthetrade #speakforthevoiceless #animallovers #elephantlover # #LoveElephants #wildanimals #wildlife #wildandfree #animal #animals #animallover #animalsofinstagram #saveanimals #saveanimals #animalrights #animalcruelty #stopanimalcruelty #animalabuse #stopanimalabuse

Zoos are businesses that capitalize on breeding, buying, and selling animals. Their main priority is profit, not animal welfare... Neurological distress in zoo animals is so common that it has its own name: Zoochosis. In captivity, animals may face a number of challenges for which evolution has not prepared them for, even if bred in a zoo. #racingextinction #jointheherd #elephants #conservation #wildlife #wildaid #elephant #savethewildlife #stoppoaching #stopthetrade #speakforthevoiceless #animallovers #elephantlover # #LoveElephants #wildanimals #wildlife #wildandfree #animal #animals #animallover #animalsofinstagram #saveanimals #saveanimals #animalrights #animalcruelty #stopanimalcruelty #animalabuse #stopanimalabuse #animalequality #stoppoaching #caged #untilallarefree

Even if it’s a great enclosure, it’s still an enclosure. Zoos are, first and foremost, for people—not animals. Zoos exist to serve the human gaze, animals don’t want to be stared at—that’s stressful . Zoochosis is considered an indication of poor psychological well-being in these animals. As it is seen in captive animals but not in wild animals. #racingextinction #jointheherd #elephants #conservation #wildlife #wildaid #elephant #savethewildlife #stoppoaching #stopthetrade #speakforthevoiceless #animallovers #elephantlover # #LoveElephants #wildanimals #wildlife #wildandfree #animal #animals #animallover #animalsofinstagram #captivity #animalliberation #tiger #tigers #tigercub #bengal #bengaltiger #savetigers #bengalcat

#Repost @elephant_news_network (@get_repost) ・・・ In a follow up to our report on riding camps and riding elephants. We know this is disturbing. However this is the reality. Each elephant you choose to ride starts life much like this little one. Taken from their mother, chained and when old enough they will be taken through the tortuous #Phajaan. This means the little elephant will be strung up and tortured for usually around a week, denied food, water, beaten, water thrown over it, challenged with fire and hurt, all to show the animal who is boss. After a week or so a new handler, a mahout, will come and untie the animal and "free" it therefore taking over the control of the elephant and prepare it for the saddle for tourists to ride on its back. You must educate yourself on what the animal is put through and then you decide if you agree with this level of cruelty and still want to support elephants used in entertainment. It's business, you go home with a photo, the elephant stays chained 365 days a year. Every day, for up to 50 years or until death. Now think if that was you.... #banthesaddle #saynotoridingelephants @elephant_news_network #ENNwecare.................... As part of our ongoing story on elephants in tethers. This is where it all starts. The baby elephant is taken from their mother. This is step 1. So when you are dreaming of your elephant ride in India or Thailand or Cambodia or Myanmar you are supporting an extreme business which exercises extreme cruelty against your beloved elephants. When the cute baby elephant is young it will be taken into the jungle, tied up in these tethers and tortured. This can happen for one whole week! The baby elephant will scream in pain. No mother, no nanny, no help. The reason the elephant is tortured is to break their spirit so they can be controlled. With saddle or bare back riding, the elephant has been tortured to be prepared for you to climb on their back! Remember this, bare back riding is not a kind way to ride elephants. It all starts with the same training method. The #phajaanceremony. Elephants are #borntobewild remember this. REMOVE elephant riding off your BUCKET LIST and support ethical elephant sanctuaries. Have a great holiday and remember HEALTH WARNING : Riding Elephants is bad for THEIR HEALTH. #racingextinction #jointheherd #elephants #conservation #wildlife #wildaid #elephant #savethewildlife #stoppoaching #stopthetrade #speakforthevoiceless #animallovers #elephantlover # #LoveElephants #wildanimals #wildlife #wildandfree #animal #animals #animallover #animalsofinstagram #saveanimals #saveanimals #animalrights #animalcruelty #stopanimalcruelty

| (@CNN #InsideAfrica) "... Cameroon's Pygmies are among its most discriminated against minorities, but at the fee-paying College Vogt in Yaounde, Emmanuel rubs shoulders with the sons of government ministers and the scions of high society. . "It was another world, a different world," he says, describing parents dropping their children off in cars and showering them with gifts. Emmanuel has faced prejudice from some of these city boys: "They mock you saying things like 'You're a villager ... you're poor, you're this, you're that.' It affects my mind," he admits. But Emmanuel is excelling, say his teachers. Literature has become an outlet for the teenager, with "The Contemplations," a poem by Victor Hugo, a personal favorite: "I know that you await me. "I will go through the forest, "I will go across the mountain. "I can no longer remain away from you. Hugo's reflections on the death of his daughter seem pertinent to Emmanuel's relationship with the Dja. The pull of the forest is strong. After nine months at boarding school, @CNN followed his 155-mile journey home for the summer; one which highlights the shifting life of the Baka." . . @Regrann from @tembokijani - Some really sad news today- please read and share. Thanks to @markjdrury for @Regrann - Ignorance, greed and corruption killed this beautiful soul. The elephants will miss you. RIP Wayne Lotter 🙏🏼🐘😢 The head of an animal conservation NGO who had received numerous death threats has been shot and killed by an unknown gunman in Tanzania. Wayne Lotter, 51, was shot on Wednesday evening in the Masaki district of the city of Dar es Salaam. The wildlife conservationist was being driven from the airport to his hotel when his taxi was stopped by another vehicle. Two men, one armed with a gun opened his car door and shot him. Lotter was a director and co-founder of the PAMS Foundation, an NGO that provides conservation and anti-poaching support to communities and governments in Africa. Since starting the organisation in Tanzania in 2009, he had received numerous death threats relating to his work. Police in Tanzania have launched an investigation into his death.
