Happy Global Climbing Day!
A few years ago, I was diagnosed with depression. It destroyed my ambition, relationships, and will to pursue and persist. I dropped out of grad school around this time as well and was desperately seeking some semblance of meaning. At first, climbing was an attempt to make me feel something. It was therapy, an outlet, a way to break out of my comfort zone. But soon it became my primary passion in life. Through climbing, I learned how to seek challenges, to confront my doubt and fear, to connect with people on a deeper level, and to genuinely love life. Climbing has introduced me to picturesque places both abroad and domestic and has given me lifelong relationships with amazing, motivating people.
I wish I could say I am being overly dramatic, but nothing has changed my life more than this sport. Climbing is for everyone. It brings us closer to ourselves, other people, and the natural world. Thank you to everyone who has climbed with me at any point or for any span of time. I cannot adequately express what this means to me. ❤
