This vista, this sunset, the dreamy gold and pink landscape that complimented her couture dress from @mignonettebridalchicago so well. This dream of adventure we all share led them to so much love and goodness in the middle of nowhere in a place called the Badlands. For those of you who have never been here, it's like a Dr. Suess meets Mars type wonderland with endless out of this world beauty. We got ready in Wall South Dakota, had lunch at the oh so fun, and ridiculously weird Wall Drug, and headed out into the Badlands to soak in nature, the unmistakable beauty of a place this untouched and pure. To say I was overwhelmed with emotion from all sides is an understatement... this week was one of my favorites to date. Can not wait to go back for more. at Badlands Wilderness

Views from Wall Drug, SD. If you ever drove through South Dakota, there are billboards advertising Wall Drug for hundreds of miles. “Free Ice Water from Wall Drug!” seems like an odd advertisement, but it caught my attention after seeing it on multiple billboards. Nestled in the city of Wall in the western part of the state, Wall Drug has grown from its humble beginnings in 1931 to a thriving oasis. Wall Drug offers dining, activities, gifts and souvenirs, visitor information and, of course, free ice water. Many road-worn travelers stop at Wall Drug and leave awake and refreshed, just like they did more than 80 years ago. But it wasn’t always a thriving business, attracting 2 million visitors each year to the small town of Wall. Ted and Dorothy Hustead struggled to make Wall Drug successful in the early days. The city of Wall was somewhat affectionately known as “the geographical center of nowhere” back then and, to compound the challenges, the Great Depression was taking hold across the United States. But the story of Wall Drug was a story of success because one simple idea took root: Offering road weary travelers free ice water. Soon travelers would make a point to stop at Wall Drug to enjoy a refreshing break and they haven’t stopped coming to Wall Drug since. Today, Wall Drug continues to offer the same amenities that made it a must-stop destination all those years ago, and visitors still stop to stretch their legs, eat a delicious home-style meal and drink some free, rejuvenating ice-cold water. Right after we snapped this photo outside of the @badlandsnps, we met a grey-haired man named Darwin who appeared outside of a nearby house in a power wheelchair. He introduced himself and offered us a ride down into buttes of the Badlands. Even though we were on the last leg of our road trip and hoped to get back to Minneapolis that day, we knew this was an experience we couldn’t pass up. We said “heck yeah!” and Darwin directed us to his wheelchair accessible pick-up truck that he powered & steered with only one hand. The area you see in the image above is technically his backyard. His family has owned it for generations and you could tell by his stories that he was so proud of that land. As we drove through the bumpy terrain he talked about his childhood; how avoiding rattlesnakes became second nature: “You learned to jump over the bottom porch step because that’s where they would hideout”. He spoke fondly of his days working as a farmer alongside his family, the day he met his wife and how they started their trucking business. Once we were in the heart of the Badlands, the two of us hopped out of the truck and explored a little. He told us to take our time and waited patiently while we took photos. On the drive back up the hill we laughed at his dorky rock jokes and ended the encounter with a soda in his garage, swapping stories about city life vs. small town livin’. He sweetly told us “no matter where we come from, no matter our background, we have more things in common than we do things that divide us”. After about two hours we decided to part ways. Darwin got a little teary-eyed as he alluded to the accident that put him in the wheelchair and how we “should never take anything for granted”. As we walked back to Eleanor we looked at each other silently with wistful smirks and sunburnt cheeks. Day 10 of 365 A throwback to last years vacation. Fun-filled memories made with @casewerk88 and our kids, ready and excited to make adventures in Keystone, SD. The drive was long, but filled with music and laughing at all the Wall Drug signs as well as some silence of just enjoying the scenery and being out, from our own state for a bit. Being near all this beauty was wonderful, the air felt fresh, the views had to be glanced over not just once or twice, but as many times as possible because they were so breathtaking. While in Badlands National Park in South Dakota last April, it rained a couple times, so we decided to check out the town of Wall. Even if you've never been to South Dakota, you've likely seen bumper stickers on cars that say "Wall Drug" on them. It is a kitsch place, but it's the King of Kitsch. You will be hard pressed to find a place that does kitsch better, larger, or more intently than Wall Drug. We bought nothing but lunch, ice cream, and fudge for the road, but we had some good laughs walking through the place. Since it was late-April, it was relatively empty, which also made it more tolerable. We made our way to the National Grasslands Visitor Center as a second stop in Wall and it was definitely more our style. We learned a good deal from the information they have and we took in their movie ... which was wonderful for all the wrong reasons. The data provided in the film was great, but it was definitely filmed more than twenty years ago and needs an overhaul. If you're looking for an Instagram account to follow that specifically covers prairies, check out @PrairieEcologist And last but not least, on our way to Badlands, coming from Custer State Park, we went through Rapid City and stopped at Wild Idea Buffalo Co. If you have read BUFFALO FOR THE BROKEN HEART by Dan O'Brien, you understand why we went there. If you haven't read it, you need to. Wall Drug, Wall, South Dakota. July 9, 2018. × Who doesn't dream of riding a giant Jackalope? 🤣 × Although part of exploring is seeing the "must see" places, Wall Drug was a little "touristy" for us. We live close to Branson, Mo, so we struggle with these types of attractions. Despite this, we were determined to get the "whole experience" and stop at places like Wall Drug, and the Corn Palace. × I am glad we stopped. I wanted to see what it was all about, and it is fun to say "yep, been there"!
