Akdeniz Sculpture ( Mediterranean) is in Turkey the most well-known and important sculpture that made by a Turkish sculptor, Ilhan Koman. It was requested by an insurance company's (Halk Sigorta) CEO Ali Neyzi in 1978. It was first erected in front of Halk Sigorta Headquarters at Buyukdere Avenue in Istanbul, 1980.
In the previous years Halk Sigorta has merged with another insurance company, Yapi Kredi Sigorta and renamed to Yapi Kredi Sigorta, thus the sculpture was moved to in front of the Yapı Kredi Headquarters in Levent district of Istanbul.
In 2014, the sculpture's right arm was damaged by the demonstrators during protests against the nearby Israeli Consulate.
After the restoration it was moved to its final location at the Yapi Kredi Culture Art Center on the Istiklal Avenue, next to renowned Galatasaray Lycee in Istanbul .
The sculpture is figure of a woman standing against sea wave and hugging all colors, people regardless of their religions, races and nations who live around the Mediterranean.
The sculpture is weighted at 4,5 tonnes and formed out of 112 equally spaced 12 mm thick sheet metal strips.
Ilhan Koman was awarded visual arts prize in 1981 for his Akdeniz Sculpture. The award was the most important prize in this field in Turkey, and was given by the Sedat Simavi Foundation.
Ilhan Koman was born in 1921 Edirne Turkey, passed away in 1986 Stockholm Sweden.
