Laurence Stephen Lowry RBA RA ( 1887 – 1976) was an English artist, whose work is now worth millions each. Lowry rejected five honours during his life, including a knighthood in 1968, and consequently holds the record for the most rejected British honours. Many of his drawings and paintings depict Pendlebury, Lancashire, a poor area where he lived and worked for more than 40 years, and also Salford and its surrounding areas. He used a limited palette (Image 3). He said : "
I am a simple man, and I use simple materials: ivory black, vermilion, prussian blue, yellow ochre, flake white and no medium. That's all I've ever used in my paintings. I like oils ... I like a medium you can work into over a period of time " A museum in Salford (image 4) is dedicated to him, opened in 2000 it cost £106 million; .
