Channel Islands Co-operative Society update: Organisers from the South West region have been in the island visiting Grand Marche and locale supermarkets, pharmacists, medical centres and funeral homes. Since their last visit in late November membership has grown by around 200. A recent pay survey showed that Co-op workers wanted Unite to negotiate a pay increase of at least RPI and to review current staff discount arrangements; which are falling behind other supermarket groups (Sandpiper & Waitrose). At the first round of pay talks, the employer acknowledged the issue in addition to its own concerns on recruitment and retention. It is exploring ways of enhancing current pay and benefits packages so as to remain competitive with the high street opposition. #unitesouthwest #unitetheunion #unitejersey at Unite the Union

Unite has praised Rolls-Royce for leading the way after the engineering giant gave its backing to the union’s period dignity campaign by agreeing to provide sanitary products at no cost in toilets across its operations in 50 countries around the globe. Rolls-Royce, which is headquartered in the UK, is the first multi-national company to make such a commitment. The global commitment comes after bosses at the Rolls-Royce plant in Washington, Tyne and Wear signed up locally to the campaign and then supported Unite representatives in raising the initiative with senior management. Unite is urging other employers to follow Rolls-Royce’s lead to ensure that women and girls have period dignity. By making changes in our workplaces, places of education and in society, Unite believes women and girls will be able to have a positive period knowing that they are able to access sanitary products. You can find out more about Unite's campaign at https://unitetheunion.org/perioddignity #unitetheunion #rollsroyce #perioddignity

Last night’s benefit event for Unite member Ken Smith (pictured) was a great success. Last August, through no fault of his own, Ken’s leg was crushed by a falling load and had to be operated below the knee; he is currently undergoing rehab but may never be able to operate a crane again. Many thanks to everyone who came along, to those who organised the event and to the musicians – including quite a lot of union talent! Thanks also to members of our wider trade union movement who came to show #solidarity #unitetheunion #irishunions #unions #strongertogether #constructionworkers

General Secretary Len McCluskey meets with London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Deputy Mayor for Housing and Residential Development James Murray and Unite members from St Mungos. Today’s rough sleeping figures for London underline why Unite has given shelter to a number of people who are homeless for at least three nights during one of the coldest winter snaps so far. Unite has responded to mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s call to offer space for ‘pop up shelters’, as many of the capital’s shelters are already at over capacity. The mayor is working with homeless charity St Mungos which is servicing and staffing the shelters. The people who are homeless were being supported by St Mungo’s staff during their stay at Unite’s Holborn offices which started last night (Wednesday 30 January). Unite’s involvement is a response to the London mayor’s ‘Severe Weather Emergency Provision’ programme. The number of people sleeping rough in London increased by 146 or 13 per cent. London accounted for 27 per cent of the total number of people sleeping rough in England, up from 24 per cent in 2017. These figures are based on a snapshot carried out on a single night by local authorities. #winterweather #homeless #homelessness #roughsleeping #unitetheunion #cold #winter #stmungos #severveweather #snow #freezing #london #homesforall #homesforpeoplenotprofit #coldweather #swep

#weremember Today, January 27th, marks #hmd2017. We remember not only the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust, but also the millions of Gypsies, Slavs and those with physical disabilities who were murdered. We remember the members of the LGBT+ community who perished. We remember all those who died for their beliefs under the Nazi regime, including many trade unionists. We remember all the victims of subsequent genocides, including in Rwanda, Cambodia, Bosnia and Darfur. We remember, and we say: ‘Never Again’ #NeverForget #NeverAgain #noracism #unitetheunion #irishunions #unions #workers
