It’s easy to forget that not only have you faced or endured a single event or cumulative (repeated) trauma, but that your physiological response is normal. Your physiological response is adaptive and expected, given what you’ve faced. Safety, health and security are basic human needs, which is why if those needs are threatened or compromised, you probably won’t like it, nor will your body. Reminders of loss or threatened needs stored in your body can sometimes trigger the fight/flight/freeze response, or a total shutdown and post traumatic stress. It’s the way the body/nervous system is working to mitigate stress and restore homeostasis. Trauma recovery can be challenging. The face when you get an email saying it’s 20 weeks to marathon day and you are doing maybe 5km’s at a push. 😂🙈🤮(This face was soon to be followed by a few ‘fuckity, fuck,fuck fucks!’ Sorry Mum😉) The positive is today I decided I’m really going to do it! 👏💪🏻 A marathon is something you HAVE to have your mind in the right place to do- and the honest truth is although I’d signed up- I knew my mind wasn’t quite there yet... and I was kinda looking for every excuse to get out of it- especially after putting it out there on social media and risking looking like a right tit when I had to retract it! 😂 So I’m feeling pretty stoked that today, I can feel my head is back in the game and I am committed to doing this. 💥 And yes- I have decided that I’m doing it for all the beautiful young people we have lost in NZ to trauma and suicide. I can’t promise you that I’m going to beat my last time (4hr18) in the Gold Coast on 7 July, in fact all I’m going for is a dignified finish- I’m a bit worried about the heat! 🤮☀️ But I can promise you I will run with absolutely ALL of my heart. ❤️ I will let you know the project I’ll be fundraising for soon! For now please just support me with positive vibes and ‘kicks up the 🍑 get out there and get training. 🏃‍♀️ It’s going to be tough.😢 It’s been four yrs since my last and I was a huge amount fitter with less aches and pains- but one thing I do know, we are stronger together and with your support, I really can move mountains. 👏👍🏻 Please keep an eye out for the project details and see if you perhaps want to run with me and raise money for it- or even come and support! Some days call for mindfulness, others for practicing intentional mindlessness. This is my intentional mindlessness practice of choice. What is a spontaneous activity that you may call on to bring you joy? _______________________________________ “If trauma is a frozen moment in time, then spontaneity is the antidote. The more we can engage in spontaneous actions the more we are able to experience joy in our lives. Mindlessness that incorporates creative activity can be just as calming to the nervous system as mindfulness and engaging in it enhances ability to be spontaneous. While we need mindfulness to be in the present and expand  capacity to tolerate the discomfort that comes with trauma stress responses, we equally need to be able to be mindless, without wandering into anxiety, stress and rumination. I’ve been redefining what power means to me lately. I used to associate power with the abuse of power — through exploitation, control and violence. So of course, I thought power was a bad thing. And I wouldn’t want to embody that at ALL. 😰 More recently, I’ve realized that power is force that is inherently neither good nor bad, it all depends on how you harness it and use it. It all depends on your intention. What I have come to understand is that I carry an immense amount of power, whether or not I consciously acknowledged it in the past. ☄️ My power comes in the form of inspiring people and helping them heal. I ultimately em-POWER them to move through past traumas, alter limiting beliefs and begin to trust their inner knowing. This is a sacred power and it behooves me (and ultimately my clients!) to intensify it and funnel it in productive ways like getting my message out there, taking inspired action and never looking back. 👑 The sensation and image of holding a scepter came up for me in some deep mind-body work today, so I decided to find and share a cool photo I found of a lady in her power. Loss—it is heavy, if it is nothing else. And it takes so much strength to choose to lose someone—to stop waiting around waiting for those who abuse your trust to change their minds and hearts. Nobody should be given a free pass to take advantage of you. Not a friend, not a partner, not a parent. . Hold dear and close those who don’t wait for your own funeral to tell you how fiercely and contentedly they love you. The real you, with no amendments required.
