Malaysia Booker, Claire Legato, Ashanti Carmon, Dana Martin.
The four astonishingly beautiful transgender women pictured, all whom have been murdered since the start of 2019.
Here are a few things I have to say relating to this:
Being a white trans man can be hard, yes. Hell, being trans is always hard, but it will never, never, ever compare to the struggle of living in this country as a trans women of color.
It is vitally important to recognize and fight back against this.
As the Human Rights Campaign put it, “it is clear that fatal violence disproportionately affects transgender women of color.” To reiterate, trans women, ESPECIALLY TWOC, face a hell of a lot more hatred than I ever will, or than their white counterparts ever will.
The nasty combination of racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia is fucking brutal and creates a vulnerability like no other.
It kills quicker than a gun shot, especially when many of these women are already facing poverty, unemployment, homelessness, etc as a result of living as their true self.
Even within the past few months I have met/seen quite a few white trans males who don’t have the slightest idea of how large of a role race plays in violence against our people (and trans women ARE our people). I do know that most of this is not a result of malice feelings towards TWOC, but simply ignorance and lack of education on the subject. But ignorance kills. We all know this.
So, LET’S TALK ABOUT IT.
EDUCATE YOURSELF ON IT, this goes for BOTH cisgender and transgender individuals.
It may not seem like much, but I promise you, it can come a long way.
Thanks for listening.
