In the 1840s, many Chinese gambier and pepper plantation owners were opium farmers who sold opium to their coolies. At times, these coolies were even paid in opium instead of cash! By the 1870s, a big syndicate was formed, and the coolie population was ruled through opium and fear. While stakeholders thrived, ordinary working Asians suffered from addiction, with opium being used to control colonised subjects.
