Humans make life so much more complex than it needs to be. Evolving from beings with a goal of mere survival, we have forged a world where it’s commonplace, pursuing what we view as more ‘elevated’ aims—creating art, accumulating wealth and propagating our ideas. It is almost bizarre to think about the importance we accord to ourselves as individuals when we dissociate from the ideas we’ve been taught to believe and look at it through an impartial lens.
The fact is, with knowledge and elevated awareness, there comes the truth. The truth is not always sweet and the world, stripped of its pretences, is never what we think it is. It’s like ripping off your blindfold, expecting rolling grasslands around you, when you’ve been standing on the edge of a cliff all along. But then, what’s the point of living your life holed up in a mansion when imposing peaks, dark forests and fathomless seas surround you? You have one life. Should you really live it in oblivion, blind to beauty just because you don’t want to open your eyes? These nuances to life—they can be troubling. But they are also immensely fascinating and reveal dimensions of complexity that is beyond even the most vivid of imaginations.
At the same time, however, there is beauty in the facade we have created for ourselves.
You have one life. Why should you choose to make it a struggle? Why not spend it in the home of your dreams, knowing warmth as your companion at the fireplace and cold as the breeze that caresses your face when you open your windows every morning? Is there something wrong with choosing comfort over truth? There is a tender beauty in happiness, in taking things at face value, in preserving your innocence. The world may be black and white in your eyes—but isn’t that better than whiling your life away trying to establish the precise difference between ochre and mustard?
Ultimately, it all lies in your hands. You have one life—one lump of clay you can shape into anything you like. You can create a vase or a sculpture.
The choice is yours.
