It was a speech he should have given, had a bullet not struck him down en-route to the Dallas venue on the 22nd November 1963.
Now, after 55 years of having been silenced, JFK can tell us in his own phonetic style the words which died with him.
Over the course of 8 weeks, sound engineers from an Edinburgh company were able to pull 116,777 sound units frim 831 of his speeches and addresses to reproduce all 2,590 words of his 20-minute speech. Innovative computer software was used to turn the sounds into recognisable speech, mimicking his distinctive Boston Brahmin accent and oratorical style.
The contrast between his eloquence and the chauvinistic swagger of Donald Trump is almost painful to hear.
The speech itself which has never been read aloud to the world, offers a warning from history, as relevant today as it was in 1963. "In a world of complex and continuing problems, in a world full of frustrations and irritations, America's leadership must be guided by the lights of learning and reason or else those who confuse rhetoric with reality and the plausible with the possible will gain the popular ascendancy with their seemingly swift and simple solutions to every world problem"
In the age of Trumpism, JFK's following remarks are particulary important: "We cannot expect that everyone, to use the phrase of a decade ago, will "talk sense to the American people." But we can hope that fewer people will listen to nonsense. And the notion that this Nation is headed for defeat through deficit, or that strength is but a matter of slogans, is nothing but just plain nonsense."
