Will sitting kill you? Yes and no. There was a study published in 2015 that basically said the more time we spend sitting, the greater our chances of getting very nasty diseases and even death are. The even scarier part was that these findings were found regardless of physical activity. So basically your hour long workout, does not cancel out the 8 hours of sitting you did at work. . Is sitting the enemy? Again, yes and no. This study looked at sedentary time, which is the time you spend that is relatively non-moving, which includes sitting. Sitting by far makes up the majority of the average person’s sedentary time. The study stated “Prolonged sedentary time was independently associated with deleterious health outcomes regardless of physical activity.” . This is pretty shocking and scary news. This study by the way was a systematic review and meta-analysis, which is an analysis that looks at other studies and is the highest rated scientific analysis/study that can be conducted. So this news shouldn’t be taken lightly. . Will most people listen? Nope. Why? Because they are human. Human nature is to not do something until we have to do it aka most people won’t take action until they are sick, injured, or in rough shape. This is one reason why there are so many sick, and unhealthy people living in the world today. But you aren’t one of them! Optimizing health, performance, and decreasing injury risk is all about preventative maintenance. Don’t let the problem become a problem. . So back to sedentary life and sitting. So what do you do? So...I am inexplicably bad at handstands or anything else that requires me to be upside down. As bad as I look in this video, I’ve actually gotten better, lol. ‼️We’ve all seen stiff people at the gym, and we’ve all likely felt stiff after a day of hard training. Joints feel achey, our backs hurt, or we just feel generally immobile. A big contributing factor to this is stiffness of the ribcage. In fact, that’s where it all usually starts. How many people do you really see do unilateral arm work? Probably not many. Bench press, barbell rows, chin ups, etc are not inherently bad movements. In fact, as we all know, they’re quite effective at hitting many muscle groups at once. However, too much bilateral work is a recipe for disaster. If we are training our ribcages and bodies to be stiff in the gym, you can expect that to carry over to you life outside the gym as well. - 💡Hardly anyone trains the natural human movement of alternation. It’s an essential component to life. Every step you take should have alternation in it. Your left foot goes forward with your right arm, and vice versa. If we want to stay healthy and mobile, why wouldn’t we train this quality? - 🔑As I’ve mentioned before, if you cannot find mobility through your ribcage, your body can and will find it somewhere it shouldn’t have to. This is when we get tendonitis and many types of chronic overuse issues. Here is where training alternation comes into play. Not only will it free up your ribcage, it will promote proper breathing and facilitation of the correct muscles you need to function well in your training and outside of the gym. - 💪🏻Swipe to see examples of how you can start incoprating this type of training today. A big note: keep the weight relatively light. Trust me, you won’t need much to feel your abs, hamstrings, and glutes light up. Don’t focus on how high you can raise your leg, instead focus on raising it in a controlled way with your hips aligned. . 🌾FORWARD FOLD: Feel your spine lengthening and your hamstrings stretching. Actively press your belly into your thighs. . 🌷LOW LUNGE: Sink your hips toward the ground.
