I am getting to old to intervene when a fight between eleven year boys is about to kick off, but I did, yesterday on the way home from town!! Thankfully two students helped me out and between us, we stopped a third punch from happening! The third boy, the timid onlooker, stood uneasily in the background..
It was obvious that both of the boys were equally vulnerable and the boy with his side kick mate was just as upset and angry as the boy I took home to his mum. On the way, he burst into tears and all the facade disappeared. He told me that he had only lived in Newcastle a few months from Egypt and that he had been in trouble after school ever day. Knowing the area well from working in this community along time, I was familiar with where he lived. He agreed that I could tell his mum what had happened and as I entered his flat and the room where mum was sitting, the curtains were closed, a large TV was booming out some kids programme and a young child was stood in the corner of the room, staring at me with caution. Mum was covered in a blanket, the boy told me she was sick. I looked over at a broken ornament under the table and a letter from the hospital.. He translated to his mum what had happened, she turned to me wearily and with tears in her eyes, said that he was a good boy and he helped her a lot.
I left my details for the boys form teacher to ring me, I hope they do.
It would be easy to misjudge the intentions of the other boy and especially as the language he was using were clearly offensive, however he too is just a child and I reckon he also has a story to tell and that’s what makes it complicated. Much more needs to be done to break down cultural barriers and the current negative rhetoric really doesn’t help matters...... ✏️ #stopthebullying #diversityandinclusion #inclusion #childrensmentalhealth #stopracism #stopbullying #raiseawareness #stopthestigma #kids #storybook #refugeeswelcome #kidsmatter #allkidsmatter #endpoverty #ink #sharingstories #forumbooks #busstop
