The Ramrod NYC
Opening between 1973 and 1976, The Ramrod was one of the few, but most popular gay leather bars in the West Village of New York. Located at 394-395 west street between 10nth and Christopher street.
On Wednesday November 16, 1980. Ronald Crumpley, a 38 year old former New York transit officer opened fire outside the Ramrod.
Vernon Kroening who was 32 and an organist at the nearby St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, was killed on site. Jorg Wenz was a 24 year old Dutch immigrant, working as a doorman at the Ramrod, also died later on that day.
Few others were shot and injured while waiting in line outside the Ramrod, including a patron next door inside the local gay dove bar, Sneakers.
The Ramrod was one of dozens of gay bars and clubs in Greenwich village in the highlight of the LGBT community.
