Not sure why this memory has been stuck in my mind lately, but it popped up and I’ve been thinking about it a lot.
#flashback to senior year in high school. Everyone is finding out where they got into college, and we’re deciding the next step in our educations. Several of us chose Sonoma State, including a girl whom I shared a few classes and mutual friends with, but wasn’t close to.
I remember bumping into her on campus, and telling her congratulations. I said we should meet up once we were all settled in at SSU. I was excited and thought we could all use a familiar face during the scary transition from high school to college.
I later learned that this girl had told one of our mutual friends she thought I was so fake. I had been “too nice,” and she didn’t buy it.
I remember being caught off guard back then, but I don’t think I put too much thought into it at the time. Looking back now though, it makes my hurt heart a bit.
I’m certainly not always sugar + spice + everything nice (my kids will be the first to attest to that 🤣). But, loving others & spreading kindness is one of the biggest lessons we are trying to teach our boys. And that’s because it is that important to us.
Kindness is real. People are genuine. And I’d like to think that most of the time a kind gesture is pure.
