Me on Hawksbill Mountain. I generally refrain from selfies (about one out of every thousand pictures so far) but felt obligated to quell rumors that I may not exist.

After a long-day's hike, it's best to find a little spot for a quick nap.

Birthday challenge accomplished! Yesterday, my best friend and I spent all day hiking one of Virginia's more challenging trails. Several birthdays ago this would have been easier but now there are some physical limitations that we had to overcome, which then manifested into mental blocks that we had to push though. The day was longer and harder then expected but worth it to know we could accomplish what we set out to do! . . . #ageisjustanumber #nevertooold #birthdaygoals #birthdaymission #birthdaychallenge #oldragmountain #oldrag #shenandoah #shenandoahnp #wwhmember #womenwhohike #outdoors #outdooradventures #adventure #adventurer #adventuretime #exploring #explore #explorer #optoutside #rei440project #forceofnature #letscamp #idratherbeexploring #idratherbehiking #idratherbeoutside #nature #wilderness #wildernessculture #mountaingirls

This was definitely the highlight of our trip. While driving along the Skyline Drive after our morning hike, we came across a bunch of parked cars on the side of the road. Obviously we asked what people were looking at and they pointed to this mama bear and her two cubs (the other one was further left in the tree). Luckily I had a zoom lens in my bag, which I rarely ever use. We were probably about 50 yards away from them snoozing away. The big black bear looks intimidating here, but she was just standing up to stretch. A few hours later, we came across another black bear and her cubs along the hiking trail. After not seeing any in Yosemite or Glacier, we finally had our first bear sighting(s).

Almost exactly in the middle of the park, the 70 foot Dark Hollow Falls in Shenandoah National Park is one of the most popular destinations to visit.

A beautiful sunset from Shenandoah National Park's Blackrock Summit with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. @emboarman, Ava, and I had a chance to take one last weekend road trip before August rolls around. Shenandoah was such a cool park with so much history. After two big trips out West to Yosemite and Glacier, it took us a short half day drive to Virginia to have our first bear sighting (twice!). I still prefer a nice bed over camping, but at the end of the day it was worth it. Another great memory made with my two ladies!

On Monday, I celebrated 27.5 years with an 8 mile hike to Mary's Rock in @shenandoahnps. Most of the trail was on the AT, the views were 360Β°, and the weather was perfect. β›°

Shenandoah certainly did not disappoint! Although I know two little loves who are looking forward to some electricity (ok, maybe mommy, too!). We're on the road again and heading north to our next destination. Any guesses?

"Sometimes the best way to recharge your batteries is to unplug them." Saw this quote today and could not agree more. After spending the weekend exploring the Shenandoah River Valley and Shenandoah National Park with my 14 year old son, I realized how important unplugging is for both of us. Nature allows us to connect on another level. We both see more trips like this in our future. How do you recharge your battery? . . . . #VAOutdoors #LoveVA #GoShenandoah #ShenandoahNP #quoteoftheday #nature #beautifuldestinations #shenandoahriver #picoftheday #exploremore #outdoorfamily #igtravel #neverstopexploring #traveldeeper #wanderlust #travelwithkids #landscape #river #canoe

Yesterday morning I grabbed a delicious (gluten-free) sandwich on my way out of Charlottesville. I drove into Shenandoah National Park, found this trail up near one of the visitor's centers, and hiked down to this waterfall. Then I sat on a rock and ate my sandwich. It was delicious. :)

Had to postpone our weekend backpacking trip because of the forecast so instead we spent Sunday at this amazing playground... #shenandoahNP
