The yellow billed oxpecker (Buphagus africanus) has evolved to feed exclusively on the invertebrates that are found on large mammals, as well as their dandruff and earwax. Although this behaviour was originally thought to be an example of mutualism, recent studies suggest that oxpeckers may instead be parasitic as they open up wounds on their host animal to eat their flesh, drink their blood and attract insects which they then feed on 🤔

The visible spout of water that rises from a killer whale's blowhole is not coming from the lungs, which (like ours) do not tolerate water. Water that is on top of the blowhole when the powerful exhale begins is forced up with the exhaled respiratory gases. Especially in cool air, a mist may form; it is water vapor condensing as the respiratory gases expand in the open air. never really introduced this fur ball to the gram. This is Indi, our little friend we adopted from the @ospcarenfrewcounty back in the end of February. Having never owned a cat before, this little girl is a DREAM. Minus the odd mischief she gets herself into, she’s an easy going kitty who absolutely loves dogs, which is a perk for Luna. Also, can you believe it took me this long to figure out how to use Lightroom CC on my phone!? Editing on the go just got so much easier 🙌

We are thrilled to reveal the winners of our 2018 Canadian Wildlife Photography of the Year competition, hosted in partnership with the @museumofnature! • Frost outlines the leaves of a fern on a winter day in Stanley Park, Vancouver. Many types of ferns grow locally in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, but if you’re thinking to forage for some fiddleheads this spring, do your research first: not every type of fern has edible shoots, and some are even toxic. This image by @geoffreyshuen is the runner-up in the Plants and Trees category. • Can Geo gratefully acknowledges the support of our prize sponsors, @vistek and @nikoncanada. #fern #fernleaves #hellobc #stanleypark #vancouver #frost #patterns #closeup #leaves #sharecangeo at Stanley Park, Vancouver, B.C.

Spring is here! It’s baby season. Yesterday I got to visit two great horned owlets who are likely about 3 months old. They were so big! My guess is they will leave the nest fairly soon. They will grow to full adult size in 3 months and then start attempting short flights from branch to branch while the parents continue to look after them. That’s pretty neat! #neature #neaturewalks . . . #photography #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #natureshots #canadianwildlife #ontariowildlife #ontariobirds #discoverontario #sharecangeo #spring #owl #owlet #greathornedowl #greathornedowlet #owlsofinstagram #elite_raptors #elite_owls #ethicalowlphoto #onlyowls #birdsofinstagram #raptor #birdofprey #natureisawesome

I was too tired to post for Earth Day after a long hike yesterday, but changing our perspective and behaviours in order to protect the earth is a daily challenge, not an annual one. The thing is, this is easier said than done. We hear the messages, we repeat the messages, we try to make changes and hope that we are making a difference, but when our society's foundation is fundamentally opposed to the direction we need to go to stave off environmental catastrophe this is as working against the tide. We are often manipulated (how many advertisements have you been exposed to this week?), so when the average person struggling to survive in a system that is increasingly feeding off them, is asked to sacrifice for the good of the planet, yet observes others being rewarded for not doing so, can you blame them for not heeding the advice? I don't have any easy answers and I have yet to hear any easy solutions. Social change is hard. Our economic system is predisposed on infinite growth which is an impossibility. On an individual scale we need to investigate our choices. Consumerism works on humanity's despair and I think there are better ways to feel whole. On a mass scale we need to work as a community to shift perspective and thus which behaviors are being rewarded. This post may make some uncomfortable and I generally try to avoid politics, but none of this is meant in judgement. I actually believe we need to be kinder to ourselves so that we can reach down and really understand what we want for our present and future. We keep building metaphorical towers, but where do they go and do we really want to go there? Does it bring us happiness? What do we as humans really need, what do we really want? These are questions I'd like to see people asking themselves and really truly thinking about from outside the influence of societal messages (this take ongoing practise). Now go (and respectfully) enjoy this beautiful planet of ours, THINK and share your thoughts with those around you. ❤️

Don't wait for the perfect conditions. Make the conditions perfect! 🌧️☔ ° So often as photographers/creators, we limit ourselves to waiting for those "perfect" conditions.. I'm guilty of it! 🙋‍♂️ But last week, I decided to challenge the normal and instead make the conditions work for me! Don't limit yourself, create with what you are given, even if it's not exactly perfect... Make it perfect. 👊 Do you find yourself waiting for perfect conditions instead of just goijg with it? 👇 Let's chat about it! ° ° ° ° 🔖 #explorenb #noisenb #gridlesslife #raw_canada #raw_moody #raw_allnature #raw_lighthouses #raw_depthoffield #raw_members #raw_vip_gold #dof_brilliance #dof_addicts #pocket_dof #igers_nb #seeninnb #mycbcnb #igerscanada #exploreCanada #maritimevibes #tv_moods #fa_fadeaway #bestmoodypics #livelovecanada #oh_canada_ #sharecangeo #canoncanada #lensdistortions #tv_depthoffield #marcp506photo @ivanscamera @canada_photolovers @paradisecanada @explorecanada @moody_tones @moody_captures @moodygrams @depthobsessed @tv_depthoffield @gridlesslife at Cape Jourimain, New Brunswick

Ice cream! My time in Santo Domingo was very short and this was the only ‘street food’ I was able to try. 50 pesos for ice cream on a hot day.
