I would trade being a Starbucks regular to being a regular for this coconut man, any day.
He asks about my day and the people that I bring to him. He makes sure everyone is doing well.
“Yes, good,” he says with this beautiful smile when I tell him the last man or woman I visited him with is happy and healthy.
He is always gracious and always smiling.
He knows the kind of coconuts I like (the ones with the extra meat inside) and always makes sure I get the “best” one.
This morning he gave me a very large coconut. It definitely entered my top five favourite tasting coconuts. After I drank it, I gave it back to him to open so I could eat it.
He cut it with a smile and handed it back to me. I sat back down on the rock nearby, feeling the spray of the ocean waves, watching the surfers jump over the rocks and rush past the break, and I began scooping the soft food out of the shell.
I feel so good here, I thought.
A moment later he came over with another smaller coconut and said, “Free! Many meat!” with the biggest smile on his face. He put it right in front of my face, already opened and ready to drink.
I was so full of coconut at this point and unsure of whether I could eat another whole one, but he was so excited to share this extra meaty coconut with me that it filled me with gratitude to stuff myself with more.
I love this coconut man.
Only ten more days here.
