Unveiled in the exposition this weekend: my very first relief. I will explain below how this work came to be.
Over the last couple of months I have worked with great pleasure on my first relief. The idea first arose when Henk Klop passed away. Henk Klop was a composer, a musician and a painter. I have never known him personally, but his organ music was often played at home. As a child growing up this music symbolised freedom for me. Mostly because the music lacks a clear and recognizable melody. The notes are detached, but together they form a composition. This allows you for the freedom to construct your own imagery to accompany the music. Exactly this feeling was what I wanted to capture in a sculpture.
Because I have never known Henk personally, and because I mainly wanted to capture the atmosphere I associate with his music I decided to make a relief instead of a regular portrait of Henk. The titel of the piece: 'The Composer' also refers to this, the sculpture is inspired by Henk Klop, but for me it symbolises much more.
An important piece of the puzzle fell in it's place during a visit to Paris with my father. After a visit to the Rodin museum, we went to a concert in the Saint-Clotilde. The combination of the music, the atmosphere in the church and the beautiful organ-front brought to mind the idea to use this organ as a background in my sculpture. A fun fact is Henk Klop made one of the recordings I heard as a child on this very organ! Another salute to Henk is the fact that the relief as a whole has the shape of a painters easel.
