I'M EXTREMELY SUSCEPTIBLE TO THE TEMPTATIONS OF CIVILIZATION, but I've developed a technique for enjoying the indulgences without giving in. On the trail, when we are low on food stores and rationing resources, we call it "Mind Cooking". By envisioning yourself, in as much detail as possible, eating a favorite food you can cause your brain to release the same hormones, endorphins, and/or neurotransmitters as it would when you are actually eating that food, producing lesser, but still present, feelings of enjoyment and satiation, without actually eating anything.
In civilization I use this to avoid overindulging. So, at Costco yesterday, I made a Mind Meal of this chocolate cake, but I didn't actually buy it or eat it. As a recovering Junkfood Junkie my appetites are easily excited by temptations such as this, but after indulging I never get as much enjoyment as I think I will, and I always feel worse than I think I will. So, overall, a Mind Cake is preferable to a real one.
