@Regran_ed from @sinopinaseats - With the rise of speakeasy bars in the metro lately, its easy to think that good old pubs are starting take a backseat now but not for buddies Chef Jing Fernando and Toby Araullo. These two wanted to recreate a homey, relaxing vibe with affordable food and good alcohol just like the pubs they used to chill at during their early days hence the birth of this new hangout place in Commercenter, South Pub.
The place easily gave off that southern feels with its interiors and laid-back atmosphere. Chef Jing greeted us and shared their little story and an intro with the food they were going to serve us. For starters, we had their Nachos, Chipirones and Mushroom Chicharon. We loved the Nachos because they make their own flour tortilla from scratch. For the mains, they served us with South favorites which were Corned Crispy Pata and Spatchcock Chicken paired with big servings of Sisig Rice and Crispy Adobo Rice. The Spatchcock Chicken is an inasal style, butterflied chicken cooked via sous vide method that’s why its tender and flavorful ’til the inside. If you’re looking for a healthier option, you can opt for their Crisp Salmon. Two sandwiches were served - The Allison and their double pattied burger, the South Pub Burger and for the cocktail drinks, we had Old Fashioned and White Sangria. Finishing the meal was a classic favorite, Twinkies! They had it deep fried and drizzled it with chocolate sauce which was a thumbs up for everyone!
For my personal favorite, it would have to be The Allison paired with the Old Fashioned. The Allison was a genius take on the usual grilled cheese sandwich. Who would’ve thought that stuffing savory sisig inside layers of melted cheese will taste that good? And while I don’t know much about alcohol and liquors but the oakiness of the drink simply complemented the flavors of combined cheese and sisig.
They have a few other drinks you can try by the way, and Chef Jing is confident in saying that despite being new, they mix the best drinks in the south area. Perhaps you might wanna head down and give ‘em a shot?
