St. Helena Parish Chaple of Ease ruins. Circa 1740. The Chaple caught fire after the Civil War, but its shell remains. The founding family's vault, located behind the Chaple, can be seen through the entrance. During the Civil War Yankees were said to have blown open the vault with the idea of valuables inside.
There were none, only bodies. Several attempts to reseal the vault door with bricks were unsuccessful. The bricks would always end up stacked, neatly the next day.
