We woke up at 3am and made our way to.. nowhere. The night had this very particular texture of the nights in India, a subtil mix of complete darkness, car flashing lights, fumes of holy smokes and temple shining ornaments. We set out to walk around the ever so famous sacred mountain of Arunachala - Shiva’s manifestation as a natural form - a pilgrimage that millions of Indians take, and that millions will never be able to take. How spoiled are we. How humbly grateful should we always feel about being so free. Hundreds of sadhus sleeping on the side of the roads, in total devotion, were whispering some “Om namah Shivayas” to our ears to guide our steps. Immersed in the fascinating power of a reality made of and by the Divine, I walked for hours in pure contemplation of what it is to live a life of belief and spiritual devotion. Believing that every manifestation in this world has a meaning, a symbolic and a way for us to honor it. So very intriguing on all levels: sociological, philosophical, personal... Along the way, we stopped at a tea stand, at 4am. People were there. Sitting, in silence. They were just there. I’m always disconcerted by people’s experience of day to day life: who are they? what is their life? What do they think of me? What kind of expectations of life do they have? How far and separated are we..? And yet, how similar was that moment for us.. ? .
This picture represents this sticky yet charming atmosphere of Indian nights. A slight feeling of anxiety, of being lost, unbound. A raw experience of being unraveled and questioned in my conceptions of the world, every step of the way. .
