We let the grass grow and become meadow. That is what we do for the bees 🐝 and the bugs 🐜 🦗🕷🦋🐛🐞🐌 and the bats 🦇 and the birds 🐦 Last year while renting, we were scolded for not keeping the grass mowed neat. They asked us when we had our own home one day, would we let our lawn get so untidy. The answer is yes. Grow meadows. Save the bees 🐝 save the world 🌍 at Drumone, Meath, Ireland

Here the plan is to make a small food forest. Using a technique called net and pan. The idea that as the rain falls it will funnel into the channels and run to a tree which will be planted in each of the holes. Once that tree hole is full then the excess can run to the next tree down the slope. I don't know if this will work any better than just planting trees. I can run the experiment a little but can't do a true side by side, so we shall see what comes of it. . . . . #regenerativeag #permaculturefarm #swale #soilbuilding #westernaustralia #homestead #homesteading #farmstead #dryland #growfoodwhereyoulive #permaculture #wheatbeltwa #sustainableliving #knowyourtrees #plantfood #planttrees #regenerativeagriculture #naturalfarming #beyondorganic #solarpower #netandpan

Making biochar at home. A long process with hopefully good results. Charcoal made by burning and then excluding air to prevent the charcoal from becoming ash. A lot of shovel work and breaking things apart. Might do it differently next time by getting a good fire all through it then just putting a lid on. It will be soaked in worm juice and compost for a few weeks and then we can use it on the gardens and trees. . . . . . . #regenerativeag #permaculturefarm #swale #soilbuilding #westernaustralia #homestead #homesteading #farmstead #dryland #growfoodwhereyoulive #permaculture #wheatbeltwa #sustainableliving #knowyourtrees #plantfood #planttrees #regenerativeagriculture #naturalfarming #beyondorganic #solarpower #biochar

How small details in nature can really lift your soul. These simple flowers by the track are just "weeds", no one planted them there but the soil conditions are such that they, out of the thousands of seeds present in the seedbank, were the ones to wake and grow 🌱💚 How amazing that they should look so beautiful together, how nature effortlessly combines beauty with purpose. When in our attempt to control nature we spray these weeds with chemicals we push the soil back towards earlier succession stages, ironically making the soil more suitable for the very plants we are trying to get rid of instead of listening to what they tell us, and creating many imbalances in the soil and crops - which then calls more chemicals... This, just like TB control, is another example of how we create so many of our problems and come up with solutions which make them worse 🤦 Could just be hope but I do feel sometimes that the tide is turning 🤞💚🌿🙏 .

“Finding my passion in agriculture has been a long road. I wasn’t born with the love of soil in my veins like my husband was or the background knowledge of where my food even came from. No, I really was a city kid thrown into a whole other world. . This world could sometimes feel lonely and isolating being away from my family and friends. In the beginning of our marriage our farm felt like it was 1000’s of miles away from where I came from when in reality it was only a 20 minute drive. . Not everyone in my life understood my new way of living, heck there are still days I struggle to understand it. Trying to explain to someone outside of agriculture things like why you can’t go away for a long weekend in the summer, even just for the night, can be frustrating and tiring. . I am blessed to have the love and support of my true friends and family in this new way of life that I am living. ... And here we are today. I am a self taught podcaster with a passion for sharing stories. I am proud of getting myself to this point and am excited to keep moving forward. I am humbled to have interview so many great women so far with more to come.” . Raise your hand if you can relate to my friend, Katelyn 🙋🏻‍♀️ Not everyone understands this farm life, and that’s what makes hearing each other’s stories so good for my soul! . You can find the rest of her blog post on faithfamilyfarmingfriends.com and definitely need to check out her podcast The Rural Woman Podcast found anywhere you listen to podcasts. The over wintered parsnips are about to erupt in a head high display of yellow umbels. Tenemos huevos! The ladies are picking up production this spring. Maybe they like this new field of wheat and crimson clover. We move the chickens to a new field every two weeks to give them fresh forage. They peck and scratch through fields of cover crop or when we are done harvesting a vegetable crop. And, we think it makes the eggs taste great! The rotation also enhances our soil fertility (Chicken 💩 adds nitrogen to our fields). #soilhealth #regenerativeag #organicfarming #freerangechickens

Taking the cows up the lane for the TB test today. For anyone not aware, we have bovine tuberculosis here in the UK, meaning all cattle have to be regularly tested and any animal which tests positive is to be culled. The whole testing process is extremely stressful as you can imagine, even worse if one of your animals has to be killed. The South West is one of the worst affected area and the neighbouring farms have all had some reactors (animals which test positive or inconclusive) so perhaps it should have come as no surprise but today several of our cows came up as "inconclusive reactors". This means that they need to be retested in 2 months and if positive or even still inconclusive, they will be culled. This is obviously a huge blow to us. The first neighbouring farm to be affected nearly 10 years ago is a very large enterprise that brings in thousands of young calves from the dairy industry and keeps them indoor for a good part of the year. Transport, numbers, proximity etc are all factors in animals getting TB. Yet it appears to work as an economic model, which really is just another illustration of the failure of our economic system to take into account any welfare issue or environmental cost. The government's response to TB has been to wage war on wildlife, mass killing badgers to stop them spreading the disease. Morally this is just mind-blowing but scientifically this is also completely unfounded. In fact there have been warnings that the cull itself could have the opposite effect by disrupting the badger population. Our test results today certainly appear to confirm that. The Wildlife Trust is doing some great work lobbying for a better solution, vaccination in particular. In the meantime we are anxiously waiting to see what will happen to our cows who tested inconclusive today. We take huge pride in looking after them and in fact they look extremely healthy. Most wild animals carry various pests and disease without actually becoming sick, because if they are otherwise healthy their immune system keeps those in check. I wonder if it's the same for our animals. Not that it will change anything, as all we can do now is wait. Feeling pretty low and angry

Paul Grieve of @primalpastures briefly explains the history of why North America has such fertile soil in the Great Plains. To learn more watch the full video, link in profile. Most people have never heard of the fact that there were 60 million buffalo roaming the great plains at one time. This was the case in many places on the globe proving that ruminants' purpose is to heal land and create/regenerate soil. Contrary to what many ignorantly believe, partnering with animals is the best way to heal the environmental damage caused by factory farming and feed people healthy nutritious food. Not growing and eating vegetables grown in a monoculture, poison laden, soil depleting way. Look up Allan Savory if you'd like to learn more about this topic.

GAP’s farm animal welfare standards include the maintenance of vegetative cover for our Outdoor Access (Step 3), Pasture Raised (Step 4), Animal Centered (Step 5), and Life on Farm (Step 5+) certification levels. These requirements are audited on every farm every 15 months to ensure that our animal welfare standards are being properly implemented and maintained. It’s one thing to read the standard and see that “75% of vegetative cover must be maintained”, but it’s another to experience how farmers and ranchers actually maintain these levels month-in and month-out. That’s what our stories behind #GAPFarmLife are all about. This time we’re taking you to Texas, on one of Grassfed Livestock Alliance’s ranches (grassfedlivestockalliance.com.) "When we look at the great soils of the world, we can see these principles of permanent agriculture in action." – Jeff Poppen, "Principles of Permanent Agriculture"⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ This article, published in the May 2016 issue of Acres U.S.A. magazine, describes how Long Hungry Creek Farm has been producing 100,000 pounds of produce annually for 25 years by embracing time tested permaculture practices.⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ Poppen continues: "The abundance of the earth is made possible by just a few elements, and the primary ones are free. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen are everywhere, in air and rain. I have really good news. We know how to grow food without hurting the land, air or water, in a way that is good for us, too. It’s simple and easy, but we need four things: minerals, a grass/legume pasture, ruminants and some way to loosen the soil. Also, we can’t be too greedy."⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ Read this article in the May 2016 issue – which you can still purchase digitally at the Acres U.S.A. bookstore – or on EcoFarmingDaily.com.⠀⠀ •⠀⠀ #acresusa #acresusamagazine #ecofarmingdaily #permanentagriculture #ecoag #ecoagriculture #sustainablefarming #sustainableag #organicfarming #regenerativeag #regenerataiveagriculture #longhungrycreekfarm
