Wednesday was my last day working with my Target Optical Family. I can’t explain to you the gratitude I have for them and this opportunity. The ways in which I have grown both as an individual and an optician are because of the impeccable leadership and camaraderie that I have found in my boss and co-workers. I wasn’t expecting to be an optician. When I first entered into the industry, I thought it was going to be just another retail position. I have never before understood how work can be meaningful and life giving in the ways Optical has been. It’s not just another retail position. It’s opportunity to care for people in an intimate and vulnerable way. Not only are guests trusting you with their appearance, they are also trusting you with their eyes. What a vulnerable place to be in. I cannot express the love that I have developed for this industry and the people I have worked with, both as co-workers and patients. From eating meals with my target optical family to going to shows with some of my patients, each moment has been sweet and full of opportunity.
To all in my optical and target world that I was privileged to work with, thank you. I love you. It is because of those of you in my target and optical world that I found God outside of the four walls of the church in ways I never expected. It is also because of my optical family that I have become the person I am. You all reminded me of what it means to love without borders. For that I am entirely grateful and forever will carry your stories in my bones and memory.
Finally, to the beautiful black women from Target who adopted me as their white gay son, you have given me hope in ways I don’t yet know how to articulate. Shazda, Momma Delece, Miss Pat, Earline, Calandra, Janice, & Christine. You all have impacted my life in paramount ways. You have shared your journeys with me and gave me the opportunity to share with you. You made sure I had food to eat and that I was taken care of. You invited me into your homes and shared with me your family histories and recipes for some divine cheesecake. You made me laugh and you saw the dignity and worth in my life. You gave me community, love, and hope. at Target Store Ward-Parkway
