I have a big announcement to make that’s been years in the making...I am about to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure! This fall, I’ve been invited to dive in the renowned, 3-person, deep-sea submarine, ALVIN, on two expeditions to the bottom of the ocean. I will have a chance to witness – with my own eyes – bioluminescence, hydrothermal vents/black smokers, methane seeps and chemical & biological processes on the ocean floor. This is a long time dream realized, and I am filled with gratitude and excitement for the incredibly rare opportunity!! The first trip is with a team from Temple University led by biologist and Professor, Dr. Erik Cordes off the coast of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. The second is with a team from University of Georgia, off the coast of Mexico in the Sea of Cortez with microbiologist and UGA Professor Samantha Joye. On both expeditions I will be a resident artist and set up a studio on the R/V Atlantis to create works inspired by the data being collected.
The second trip is part of my year-long award as the Delta Visiting Chair for Global Understanding, established by University of Georgia through the support of the Delta Airlines Foundation. The chair “hosts outstanding global scholars, leading creative thinkers, artists and intellectuals” who “engage the Georgia community through lectures, seminars, discussions and programs...with a focus on how the arts and humanities can intervene in major contemporary issues”. I’m deeply honored to be awarded this title, which was given previously to Alice Walker(!).The Delta Visiting chair is “founded upon the legacy of the Delta prize for Global Understanding which was presented to individuals - including Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Desmond Tutu and Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter - whose initiatives promoted world peace by advancing understanding and cooperation among cultures.” In conjunction with the research and exploration on the expedition, I am also thrilled to have a year long solo exhibition opening November 1st at the Georgia Museum of Art. #alvin #ocean #Atlantis #georgia #delta
