Thunderchild by Calvin Jordan. A play about a war between Mars and Venus. I was Martian Captain Valentine. Georgie Smith was Admiral Romanov and Brenton Setchfield was Leiutenant Tremaine.
I respected Calvin for the vision he always had for his shows. The plays were always built upon genre: science fiction, fantasy and superheroes, so he understood the importance of the visual when doing shows like these. This was a fifteen minute show and yet here we were in uniforms that immediately signposted who we were and even our ranks. I have to give credit to both him and Kendra Rabbitts for their amazing work here. I think the beret was Brenton's but yeah, other than that, all those two.
Another detail I love is that it wasn't just the costumes. Georgie, Brenton and I were cast because we fit an image Calvin had of the characters. Georgie is a wonderfully reserved actress. She can be stern and severe, and appear much older than she is, but there is always a warmth in her characters. A natural charisma. Brenton appears boyish and innocent, but his face also expresses concern, and a sense of quiet responsibility. Again, a naturally good person. Why Calvin thought I was a perfect fit for playing a villainous slimeball? Well...I'll leave that to your own conclusions. All that mattered to me was that I got to sport a sh*t-eating grin a lot except from moments when the mask slipped, when a natural ugliness and hatred would come across. More on that tomorrow.
Anyway, if anyone knows who the photographer is please let me know. I don't actually who took these, but they're great photos and it's a pleasure to showcase them.
