Monitoring with Fetoscope or Pinard Horn 🔊
The least technical method of monitoring baby’s heart tones in labor is by using a fetoscope or pinard horn. These instruments are placed over the birthing person’s abdomen and the provider hears or feels the baby’s pulse - much like listening to your own heartbeat with a stethoscope. This is probably the most uncommon way to monitor a baby in labor, because this method of monitoring can be a bit tricky. It can be difficult to get an accurate reading based on baby’s or mother’s position, or if the provider is not skilled at listening with a fetoscope in labor. Using this method may also require the laboring person to change position in order for the provider to get an accurate reading. .
Disadvantages of this method:
1. Not as accurate.
2. Birthing person may be restricted in position or movement while the provider is listening.
3. Most likely not an option with OB’s or in hospitals, and sometimes not even with some homebirth midwives.
