Today has been very tough. I woke up thinking of my brave friends at Essex Pig Save preparing to go and witness injustice beyond any compassionate and sane person's comprehension. Then, the image of my beloved Mr Rupert popped up on my Memories. Taken from us far too early but never forgotten and always in our hearts and minds. Constant images of barbarity - calves born to die on Christmas Day, frightened and confused being shipped to their deaths. What child doesn't want - and need - it's mother but these are just babies, ripped away from theirs and sent to suffer and die. Then the advert from Iceland which was banned for telling the truth, for sending out a message the big retailers and manufacturers don't want people to become aware of. Why, oh why, as a species do we continue down this path of exploitative, cruel, depraved greed and destruction?
What to do? Curl up in a ball and continue to torture myself on the computer with images I am helpless to rectify or remedy or go out and run. To try and train away the misery. 24 miles later and I feel more focussed, have reasoned out lots of problems and thought of answers to many. Do I need to run so far to do this? Yes, I need to suffer, I need to remember what it is like, to have a taste of what millions and billions are enduring right this second. The harder and further I run, the more I remember and the miles become more bitter sweet. Perhaps they will enable me to be better prepared to do well in my next event for the animals - to exhibit the benefits of compassionate living in it's best possible light. Now to feed the babies, the ones who are safe, the ones who will never know the fear and pain of so many. It is a comfort seeing them happy but a constant reminder that so many aren't afforded their basic rights as sentient beings. I won't say they are 'lucky' because they are not lucky - they are just being allowed to have what is rightfully theirs.
