Here is to honoring and upholding my Bangali identity. Here is to honoring and upholding my Bangali heritage and culture. Here is to honoring and upholding my Bangla tongue.
When my children were born, there were no doubts that I would teach them to speak Bangla. I want my children to know about their roots because I take pride in it. So when people ask why I would teach Bangla to my kids as if it’s a horrible thing to do, it boils my blood.
To those people, I say the following: I am teaching my children Bangla because it’s my mother tongue. I’m teaching my children Bangla so that I could communicate with them better. After all, my English is mediocre. I’m teaching my children Bangla because people died to speak it! How inconsiderate and selfish of you to ask such a ridiculous question! Stop taking pride in “amar bacha Bangla pare na” (my children don’t know how to speak Bangla) because you think that knowing how to speak English makes them superior. #ekusheyfebruary
