After the traditional, almost Napoleonic uniforms worn at the outset of war in 1914 had made French soldiers conspicuous targets on the battlefield, causing a staggeringly high casualty rate, a change was made to a horizon blue. The original colour was intended to be a blend of red, white and blue threads, representing the Tricolor, giving the cloth a purplish hue, but the red was manufactured in Germany and so impossible to source, leaving a blue and white mix instead. The colour of the new uniform resembled that of the cornflower and the cloth would fade with use, so that veterans with long service could be proudly identified. This made new recruits, “Les Bleuets” equally obvious, especially the draft of young conscripts who were sent to battle along the Chemin des Dames and the Aisne in 1915. As with the poppy in Britain, the cornflower has since been adopted in France as a symbol of remembrance. Here, poppies and the cornflowers grow alongside each other by the roadside at Carnoy, only a few metres from the #CWGC cemetery and only a mile or so from where the French and British armies joined on the Somme. #remembrance #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme100 #passchendaele100 #ypres #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #incentivetravel #connoisseur #ypres #canon_official #canon7d #iPhone7+ #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #corporateevents #corporate #incentive #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

The Cambrai Memorial - The Battle of Cambrai, which saw the first use of tanks in great numbers, began a century ago. Spectacular gains by the British were hailed back home by the ringing of church bells countrywide, but a salient had been created which would prove to be difficult to defend, especially as half of the 476 Mark IV tanks had been knocked out or had broken down. Skillful German counter-attacks would then reduce the British advance to virtually nothing. #cambrai100 #remembrance #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme100 #passchendaele100 #ypres #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #ypres #canon_official #canon7d #iPhone7+ #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

A panorama of Lone Tree Cemetery on Messines Ridge with the trees surrounding the Spanbroekmolen Crater on the horizon to the left. The mine, with 90,000 lbs of high explosive, was blown with 18 others on 7th June 1917 and some of the soldiers in this cemetery were caught by the falling debris. The crater has since filled with water and is now known as the Pool of Peace. #remembrance #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme100 #passchendaele100 #ypres #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #ypres #canon_official #canon7d #iPhone7+ #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Remembrance. A wreath for Uncle Frank, who lies in Lonsdale Cemetery at Thiepval on the Somme. His sister, Annie (Grandma to me and pictured alongside him) was 18 when he was killed and never forgot him, mourning him throughout her life. She would never talk about him, except on one occasion when I pressed her rather too clumsily, “He was the best big brother any girl could wish for.” Moved by her sorrow, I never asked her again. #remembrance #cwgc #royalbritishlegion #cwgc100 #somme100 #passchendaele100 #ypres #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #englandrugby #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #iPhone7+ #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Remembrance. And two very special poppies on the blazer this year. The red poppy came from the England Rugby World Cup team tour of the Somme 2007. The Passchendaele 100 pin was made to commemorate the centenary of the Third Battle of Ypres from the fuses of shells found on the battlefield, with the red enamel in the centre mixed with earth from various locations in the Ypres Salient. #cwgc #royalbritishlegion #cwgc100 #somme100 #passchendaele100 #ypres #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #englandrugby #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #iPhone7+ #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Off the beaten track again, looking towards the Thiepval plateau across Nab Valley. Many will come to the Somme to find relatives lost in the fighting and here I am conscious that Uncle Frank would have known this area well from frequent patrols and scrutiny of maps, though without the advantages I have of standing in the open with a camera and a cup of tea. #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme100 #passchendaele100 #ypres #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #englandrugby #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #iPhone7+ #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

For over two years, the Germans resisted all attempts to wrestle Vimy Ridge from their grasp, so their artillery could rain havoc at will on Arras and the plain of Douai. Captured by Canadian forces on the first day of the Battle of Arras on 9th April 1917, it is a fitting place for the memorial to all missing Canadian soldiers of the Great War. #canada #canadaday #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme100 #passchendaele100 #ypres #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #englandrugby #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #iPhone7+ #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

We've been paying our respects to Captain Shirley Cuthbert Day MC for many years now. Those who have researched him over the years have all been impressed and warmed by his humanity and selflessness, and so finding his name on the Tyne Cot Memorial has always prompted a minute or two of quiet reflection. An honour to remember him today on the centenary of his death. #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme100 #passchendaele100 #ypres #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #englandrugby #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #iPhone7+ #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Uniform jacket of a Royal Fusiliers lieutenant. The blue chevron denotes one year's service overseas after 31st December 1914. The strip of Russian gold braid on the other arm shows that he appeared in the Casualty Lists as 'wounded'. Torn and patched, this jacket (and its owner) clearly endured much service. It was rescued from a shop for hiring fancy dress outfits. #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme100 #passchendaele100 #ypres #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #englandrugby #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #iPhone7+ #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Guillemont, Somme. From the site of Arrow Head Copse. Near this spot, during the 48 hours of 8th and 9th August 1916, Captain Noel Chavasse and Lt. Gabriel Coury would be awarded the VC and two England rugby internationals, 2nd Lt Lancelot Slocock and Sgt Jack King would be killed in action. From the German perspective in a sunken land close by, Lt Ernst Junger of the 73rd Hanoverian Infantry Regiment commented that the ground was carpeted with bodies, British to the front of his position and Germans behind. It was a charnel house. #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme100 #passchendaele100 #ypres #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #englandrugby #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Where the Bray and Peronne roads cross near Fricourt lies a small communal cemetery containing the graves of a Blenheim aircraft crew, Pilot, Observer and Wireless Operator from 59 Squadron shot down during a reconnaissance mission on 22nd May 1940. Two days before, the German Panzer Division had thundered through this area. A generation earlier, close to this spot, Siegfried Sassoon watched the opening of the Battle of the Somme and commented on the action unfolding before his eyes. "Fricourt," he said, "half-hidden in clouds of drifting smoke, blue, pinkish and grey. I am looking at a sunlit picture of Hell, and still the breeze shakes the yellow weeds, and the poppies glow under Crawley Ridge ..." #passchendaele100 #ypres #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #englandrugby #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme100 #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

At Hooge, the Menin Road slopes gently towards Ypres and the German line stood here from 1915 until July 1917, with all tactical trump cards in their hands. The Germans knew that the spot at the end of the road, just visible in the photo, would be in constant use by the British as they brought men and materiel into the Salient, so they shelled it mercilessly. As one of the most dangerous places on the Western Front, it became known as Hellfire Corner. Today, it is a roundabout. #passchendaele100 #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #englandrugby #cwgc #cwgc100 #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #somme #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

The flat landscape of the Ypres Salient is all too clear here from the German position at Gravenstafel and it was from here on the afternoon of 22nd April 1915 that they unleashed the gas attack which allowed their infantry to punch a cavernous dent into Allied lines. The ground was not retaken until 4th October 1917, when the New Zealand Division overran the village of Gravenstafel during the Battle of Broodseinde (Third Battle of Ypres). It was a stellar success, opening up the left flank of the Passchendaele ridge, and a monument was erected in the village to commemorate the New Zealanders who fought here. #passchendaele100 #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #englandrugby #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #connoisseur #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

If I'm really honest, I have struggled to photograph Tyne Cot Cemetery and, at the same time, reflect the scale, spirit and profound emotion of the place. I'll keep trying. This weekend sees the centenary of the opening of the Third Battle of Ypres, which culminated four months later in the fighting for the Passchendaele ridge upon which this cemetery now stands. "I died in Hell. They called it Passchendaele." When strolling by fields of waving corn, it's incredibly difficult to imagine the events which took place here a century ago. The cemetery on the horizon is the only give-away, perhaps. The 31st Division, made up of many Pals battalions, attacked over this ground on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. At the outset of the war in 1914, this was a grand idea: friends joining up together in search of glory, going through thick and thin with a 'tickled to death to go' attitude. In the currency of the time - Pals. Nobody ever thought at the outset of the war, what the effect would be on a community if their boys suffered terribly in battle, if these groups of tightly knit soldiers not only fought together, but died together, too. Later historians would agree that these Pals battalions, with their insuperable optimism and camaraderie, were 'two years in the making, and ten minutes in the destroying.' #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #connoisseur #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Staff Nurse Nellie Spindler lies close to two England Rugby internationals, Lt Colonel George Dobbs and Lt John Raphael in Lijssenthoek Cemetery near Poperinghe, behind the Ypres Salient. George Dobbs and John Raphael died of their wounds in June 1917, within only a few days of each other. Nellie was stationed at 44th Casualty Clearing Station at Brandhoek and on the morning of 21st August 1917, after a long night in the operating theatre, she turned down the offer of a walk with her friends, preferring to spend some time resting on her bed. German artillery, searching for an ammunition dump nearby, hit the hospital and Nellie was badly wounded by shrapnel. She never regained consciousness and died twenty minutes later in the arms of Nurse Wood. Nellie now lies alongside 10,000 men in one of the largest British military cemeteries in the world. #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #connoisseur #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Beaumont Hamel British Cemetery lies in the middle of the old No Man's Land and looks across the New Beaumont Rd towards Hawthorn Redoubt, where the British exploded a 40k mine to herald the opening of the Battle of the Somme. Film of the explosion remains one of the most enduring images of the Great War and the copse on the left horizon now marks the site of the crater. #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #connoisseur #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Following the events of 1914 on the Somme will bring you to little villages like this one, which seem to nestle into the contours of the land and, strangely, they always seem deserted. Beautiful views. In open fighting, before the front line hardened into trenches, French and German soldiers were locked bayonet to bayonet here. #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #connoisseur #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Cresting the rise into Albert, I was met by this stunning aspect. As the tower of the basilica eclipsed the rising sun, I had only moments to scramble out of the driving seat and grab the camera before it reappeared once more and then I would kick myself at the lost opportunity. Bois Francais opposite Fricourt is a peaceful spot, which I visit frequently with small connoisseur groups. Lt Bernard Adams was stationed here with the 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers in the months preceding the Battle of the Somme and he wrote in great detail about all aspects of army and trench life. He said that from this position, it was possible to observe the length of both front line trenches as they snaked northwards towards Albert and beyond. The landscape directly behind the Land Rover Discovery would have fallen under his gaze as he scrutinised everything through his binoculars. And of Bois Francais, (just out of shot to the right) he noted that even the tree stumps had been swept away by the shelling. #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #connoisseur #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

After a day exploring the battlefields around Le Cateau, I knew there had to be a final visit before heading for the hotel and a well-earned beer or two. The village of Ors lies close to the Sambre à l'Oise Canal and the communal cemetery is easy to miss with only the small green CWGC sign by the gate to tell me I had eventually arrived. Up the steps and through the entrance, the small plot of white headstones halfway down on the right stood in contrast to the surrounding village graves, yet I was left with the strong feeling they are welcome here and a source of local pride. This is a remarkable place. Of the 59 men here, most are from the 2nd Bn Manchester Regiment and the 16th Bn Lancashire Fusiliers, with two VC winners amongst them, who all fell in the intense fighting to cross the canal and capture the village in early November 1918. But I had come to see one grave in particular, that of Wilfred Owen, whose iconic poetry resonates from the face of battle and rings down the ages. The setting sun cast long shadows and added a special ambience to a few moments which will live long in the memory. “Strange friend,” I said, “here is no cause to mourn.” “None,” said that other, “save the undone years, The hopelessness." Strange Meeting, by Wilfred Owen (Lieutenant, 5th Bn Manchester Regt, MC, Aged 25) #nothinglikestandingonthespot #beingthere #theinstaretreat #wilfredowen #warpoetry #ww1 #rugbyremembers #lewismoody7 #cwgc #cwgc100 #somme #ypres #arras #landrover #discovery #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #connoisseur #corporateevents #corporate #teambuilding #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

The Caribou looks out across the battlefield where the Newfoundlanders it commemorates made their fateful attack on the first day of the Somme. The only figures moving in the landscape and silhouetted against the bright morning sky, they made perfect targets for machine gunners a quarter of a mile away. Lochnagar Crater, La Boisselle. It is often difficult to gauge the magnitude of this enormous explosion, even when we consider the plain facts: 60,000 lbs of high explosive, the greatest man-made sound to that date, spoil thrown 4,000 feet into the air. Perhaps if you zoom in to find the people standing to the right of the cross you will get an idea of the scale of this enormous hole in the ground, which causes first-time visitors to take a sharp in-take of breath. #ww1 #cwgc #somme #ypres #arras #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #connoisseur #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

A glimpse through the gateway of the Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof (German Military Cemetery) at Fricourt. With the centenary of the Somme last year, the cemetery has enjoyed more attention, with the crosses and plaques restored, the grass cut and flowers in abundance. This has not always been the case, but it was always encouraging to see that poppy wreaths were laid here frequently. There are over 17,000 soldiers here, of whom only 5,057 are marked with a cross. The remaining 11,970 lie in four communal graves at the top of the cemetery. Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron, was buried here after being exhumed from his grave at Bertrangles, only to be moved again in 1925, this time to Berlin as a celebrated war hero. #ww1 #cwgc #somme #ypres #arras #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #connoisseur #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Whilst taking the scenic route eastwards from the southern area of the Somme in search of the flash points of the Retreat from Mons, I totally lost my bearings - even the sat nav threw in the towel. Then again, I find the nature of a recce is to take time and even run the risk of getting lost. The day was still young and I was in no particular rush. Quite by chance, I came across this isolated cemetery containing the graves of men who fell during the last few weeks of the war, many during the heavy fighting here in mid-October 1918. As I wandered between the rows, I was struck by the proximity of the Armistice (so close) and more so by the irony which rests ponderously on the ambiguous name of the cemetery. #ww1 #cwgc #somme #ypres #arras #canon_official #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #connoisseur #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington

Following the footsteps of Albert Collingwood brought us to this spot, where he and his pals of the "Newcastle Commercials" scrambled up the bank at the side of the road to attack the German fortress at Thiepval. When the village eventually fell nearly three months later, Albert was never found and his name is on the Thiepval Memorial (right of photo) which stands on the plateau which was the objective of the attack during which he died. #ww1 #cwgc #somme #ypres #canonphotography #canon7d #jaguarlandrover #landroverdiscovery #rovergroup #connoisseur #paulgarlingtonbattlefieldhistorian #paulgarlington
