There is so much more to a custom gown than fabric. Here's my process to give you a small sample of what goes on in the creation of a gown:
Each dress I make starts with a basic bodice sloper (tried and tested) and then with some basic math and a French Curve, a new bodice pattern is constructed to the clients measurements. The custom bodice paper pattern gets rough pinned on the mannequin and the fun starts! I pencil on design marks, erase, match lines, re-draw and then admire.
Once I'm happy with the design, the paper pattern comes off the manequin and I again use my trusty french curve to smooth and even the lines out. Then I cut it up, trace it onto fresh paper and add in the seam allowances where I need to.
In total, if you are counting, that's 3 patterns.
1. My basic starting bodice
2. Custom client bodice
3. Final pattern
Total time for this phase is anywhere from 2-4 hours.
