The New York Subway is one interesting system! You need to know where exactly you’re going and pay attention to the trains or you’ll get lost. Everything and everyone moves fast so you need to be ‘chonjo’ as we say in Swahili 😎
Once you figure it out it’s efficient and it’ll get you to where you’re going. We used it from JFK into Manhattan, and our commute around when we weren’t walking or doing the touristy Big Bus. We used a cab twice, to the airport and when we were late to get somewhere.
For the fare, we bought and topped up the Metro Card, all from the machine, and used it through our stay. There’s attendants to help if you get stuck (this was at the JFK station though). Better to have cash, in coins or small notes than card, even though the machines accept card. The metro card has a long expiry date so if you plan to go back you can always keep it. If not you could give it (or sell?) to someone who’s there or going, then they can top up to use. at New York, New York
