Stuff, boats, stuff on boats, scientists, and 800cfs. Quick look back at a NPS Yampa trip July 12-18 with the Northern Colorado Plateau Network research crew. 800cfs is underrated incase you were wondering. Great to be back in such a magical place volunteering with an amazing crew. #keeptheyampawild #npsvolunteer #dinosaurnationalmonument #keeppubliclandsinpublichands #unitedoutside #headingdownriver #everythingbutthekitchensink #science #geomorphology #botany #invasivespecies #northerncoradoplateaunetwork @maraviarafts @yeti @dinosaurnps @npsvipnetwork @npsncpn

You can take the ranger out of the park but you can't take the park out of the ranger. Some of you may recognize the newest addition to our National Park Service Volunteers-In-Parks team - pictured on the right (next to volunteers Tom and Andy) is former Ranger Paul who retired last month after 50 years of service to the National Park Service at Fort McHenry. We weren't quite ready to see Paul go and we're thrilled that he will be staying at the fort and continuing to share his knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors! #volunteer #parks101 #FindYourPark #NPSVolunteer

This wonderful woman has been volunteering at the park for 3 years. Linda Fleagle faithfully helps hold down the visitor center; greeting and orienting visitors, helping stock, price and arrange items in the bookstore, and is always ready to help wherever needed. In addition to her friendly smile and welcoming manner, Linda is well-read and traveled in regards to the former president, and has great insight into Hoover's life and legacy. We are very thankful to have her presence at Herbert Hoover NHS! #NPSVolunteer

Jane and I volunteered at the 1st Annual Women's Trail Day hosted by the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy and had a blast! It was such an empowering experience to spend the morning with these badass ladies, breaking shit and giving back. Y'all... I was trusted with a pick axe, sledgehammer, and rock bar today 😏 So. Much. Fun! Looking forward to the next volunteer opportunity! #npsvolunteer #womenstrailday #womenwhohike #wwhmember #trailbuilding #landsend #goldengateparks #bayarea #california #womenempowerment

Last year I was talking with my dad and we decided to look into volunteering in the community, I suggested a local park (I have a little bias). After looking around we found the Usher program and attended the training. I am really excited to be a doing front line work again and be a volunteer at such a unique park for the 2017 season! #NPSvolunteer #wolftrap

Several months ago, we were hired to volunteer at Cape Lookout National Seashore. When I received my volunteer packet, I noticed it said "no children". I immediately called the Ranger to inform him we had two boys but they both are experienced volunteers. We were approved and all was well. Except, the Ranger who hired us moved on and no one knew of our conversation. Fast forward to April, my van broke down and somehow, it was discovered I had two boys joining me. The day before I was to pick up the van and go to volunteer, I received a call (that went to voicemail) saying no kids were allowed to volunteer in the cabin camps. We were crushed. I spoke to a ranger and begged him to give the boys a chance. Especially since we already missed a week so we would only be at camp for 19 days. So he did. When we arrived here, I heard multiple times "no kids" in the cabin camps and it really made me anxious if we would ever be able to prove to be great volunteers. Tomorrow is our last day. I have no idea how the Rangers here feel about us but we completed every task and in my opinion, we crushed it! I am so proud of the work Brendan and Aodhan did, I want y'all to see these are amazing kids! You can give a 4th grader a free pass and he will love the parks! However, you can give a kid a chance to volunteer in the park and they will make the parks a better place for everyone. This is all the garbage A picked up on our ride today. Chairs, toilet seat, mattress, beanbag chair, tent, and a lot of bottles! The tent and mattress I wanted to leave behind. The mattress because it is as heavy from being wet. The tent because it was half buried in sand and hard to get. A said, "No, we can do this!" And we did. My kids are my heroes! They make the world a better place not just for me but for everyone. #bethechange #npsvolunteer #volunteer #nvw #findyourpark #capelookout #beachcleanup @nationalparkservice

Research-in-the-Park from Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas is the national recipient of the Hartzog Award for Outstanding Youth Volunteer Service Group. In 2016, the Research-in-the-Park volunteers from the Arkansas School For Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts contributed 1,133 hours of service. Dedicated students worked long hours to complete various research projects. They monitored water quality, evaluated geologic resources, identified algae specimens, photographed insects for the museum collection, served as trail ambassadors, and completed analysis of thermophilic bacteria unique to the hot springs. They amassed thousands of water-quality data points through the weekly collection of temperature, pH, specific conductance, and dissolved oxygen readings at 35 thermal water springs. The collection of this data allowed the park to create a baseline for these water quality parameters that had not previously existed. #findyourpark #NPSvolunteer #NVW @hotspringsnps @usinterior @nationalparkservice @midwest.nps @npsvipnetwork @healthyparkshealthypeople @armathsciarts #hartzogaward

Dear Kay Caudle, Because of you, the memories of the Cheyenne survivors are being told. Despite the sadness, the history, and the bitter cold. Because of you, the struggles of the soldiers are being taught. Including how some died, while others no longer fought. Because of you, the visitors are greeted with a smile. Even if they stay only a very little while. Because of you, the rangers can better work together. Even if it is only to put up an extra tipi tether. Because of you, a Volunteer-In-Park, this place can do much more. And, never (due to staffing) be forced to lock the door. Thank you, Kay, for all you do. Including making a Sesquicentennial quilt, too! Sincerely, The Washita Battlefield NHS Park Rangers #WashitaNPS #FindYourPark #NPSvolunteer #NationalVolunteerWeek

Founding Winter Wildlife Docent: Sterling Hada Volunteering since 1996 Why do you volunteer? “A great deal of my core values revolves around service: Service to others, both close friends and strangers, family and extended community. It's why I am a teacher, because I love to lead others in a discovery of new and different things. For myself, volunteering feeds my soul, providing me with a mental, emotional, psychological and even spiritual catharsis when life in general has been stressful.” #FindYourPark #NPSVolunteer #NVW #NPS101 #HumansofPointReyes

Because it's #NationalVolunteerWeek and #tbt, we wanted to share this photo of volunteer Christian Caul (center) staffing an information table during our NPS Centennial celebration last year. Christian started out as a participant in 2014's Maggie L. Walker Youth Summer Leadership Institute, and has been a volunteer with us ever since. This summer, we're also excited to note that he will also be joining our Interpretation staff as an intern. Thanks for all you've done - and will do - for us, Christian! #FindYourPark #NPSvolunteer #NVW #maggielwalker

It is National Volunteer Week! Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, Fort Clatsop has an outstanding team of Volunteers in Parks (VIPs). These VIPs assist greeting and orienting visitors, fee collection, custodial work, conducting tours, invasive plant control, answering visitors’ questions, sewing living history clothing, data entry, leading hikes, native plant nursery work, answering phones, designing curriculum, library and inventory projects, archive/collections work, conducting living history and education programs, and special events. In 2016, more than 400 people volunteered more than 9,000 hours for Lewis and Clark National Historical Park. Trail Crew Volunteer: Sean Pickton (also a Winter Wildlife Docent, Trail Patrol, and Elephant seal monitor volunteer) Volunteering since 2016 What do you enjoy most about the volunteer work you do? “I started volunteering because I love wildlife and wilderness, however, it is the people that I have come to enjoy the most about the volunteer work. I have met some really great people, park staff, visitors and other Volunteers In Parks, in my time here. The park has a neat way of bringing people together.” #FindYourPark #NPSVolunteer #NVW #NPS101 #HumansofPointReyes
