These enormous wheels - 6 feet in diameter!- are part of the new cultural arts center that opened last month at the new Hudson Yards on the far west side of Manhattan.
Called The Shed @theshedny -it’s one cool building. I’ve posted the metallic bronze structure called The Hive - which alone is worth the trip over there - but this place is also amazing.
It’s a huge multi-use space and last night I saw Icelandic performer Björk @bjork in her 8 show concert called Cornucopia. It featured psychedelic sound and visual effects that seemed right in this cool space. Balmain @balmain costumed flute playing fairies circling around Björk who had a hard plastic pink bubble costume and a beehive hairstyle. A gold mask completed the look.
Those huge wheels are not just cool looking though- they function : the building's roof features a 8,000,000-pound retractable shell, which can close and open within 15 minutes; when the shell is retracted, the open-air plaza becomes a publicly accessible outdoor space. The shell retracts on six of those wheels each powered by a six 15-horsepower motors using “industrial crane technology”.
Mayor Bloomberg donated $75 million of the $475 million this cost to build this center. So like everything else in NYC, there was plenty of push-back and controversy, but hopefully it will become a big part of the art and cultural landscape in Manhattan. at Hudson Yards New York
