This week is dedicated to one of the most important works of late medieval art in Austria. The so-called Scottish altar. Let’s have a look at it’s date of production. Written sources that could tell us something about the painter and his workshop have not been preserved. In the paintings themselves, however, references to the time of the altar's creation have been incorporated. The first one is hidden in the depiction of the entry into Jerusalem. If you take a close look at the architecture in the background, you will discover the year 1469 above the city gate (second picture). A second hint is in the flight to Egypt (third picture). If you take a closer look at the scenery, you will discover a crane (fourth picture). This shows that the Dominican church of Vienna was under construction at that time. Now, we know that between 1458 and 1474 there were building activities here. The picture shows that the construction is almost completed, and therefore a date not long before 1474. Taking these indications together we can conclude that the altar was made with great probability in the late 1460s and early 1470s. Inspiration: Day 6. Museums inspire me in so many ways -creatively, mentally and professionally. When I visit the Met, I visit the Egyptian wing every time. I am reminded of my fascination with Ancient Egypt as a little kid. Hapshetsut was one of my favorite pharaohs because she was a woman and I thought that was cool. It was this passion that drove me to study history and eventually to a museum career path. #millennialmuseumblast at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Did you know two of Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirror Rooms are currently on view #AtTheBroad? From outside Longing for Eternity (2017), viewers can peer through porthole-like windows into the dazzling, LED light–filled hexagonal chamber. The result is a distinctly visual immersion, and a counterpoint to the rooms that envelope the viewer. . Yayoi Kusama, Longing for Eternity, 2017. Mirrored box and LED lights. 74 years ago today, The United States Marine Corps launched “Operation Detachment” against the Japanese held island of Iwo Jima. This operation had one main goal; to capture the island that included its three vital airfields. In the initial invasion, military planers have misrepresented the conditions on the beaches causing the Americans to underestimate the Japanese situation. They figured the naval bombardment that took place before the invasion destroyed most opposition but they couldn’t be more wrong. Japanese General Kuribayashi waited for the Americans to become crowded on the beaches where they would be most vulnerable and then attacked. According to numerous eyewitness accounts, the beach turned into a bloodbath. The Japanese machine guns and artillery battered the virtually unprotected beaches and inflicted heavy casualties on the landing force. This would set an unfortunate precedent for the next 34 days of fighting. This fighting tested the Marine Corps and would leave an imprint in American History forever. The items pictured here are relics from the battle that were taken home by Coast Guard Veteran, Dale Larocque when he was on the island in the 1980s. Although years have passed, the ground was still littered with the memories and sacrifices of all who served. #museumeducation #veterans #museums #museum #history #planer #marinecorps #coastguard #americanhistory #memorials #japanese #islands #beaches #military at Mt Suribachi, Iwo Jima, Japan

This is a trilobite mass death assemblage. Trilobites are a type of extinct arthropod that sort of look a little bit like a woodlouse. Mass death assemblages such as this typically indicate an extraordinary event had occurred, which resulted in the death of these individuals. However, other studies of such assemblages suggest that these were mass trilobite orgies. Yes, you read that correctly! In these instances, the trilobites mated and shed their exoskeletons. Similar scenarios occur today, with several types of living arthropods. This particular specimen is around 475 million years old and was collected in Morocco, Africa. It is on display at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center, USA. #fossils #fossils #museum #museums #geology #rocks #science #prehistoric #invertebrate #paleontology #palaeontology #naturalhistory #nature #naturalworld #massdeath #sex #animal #animals #dinosaur #dinosaurs #fossilhunters #fossilhunting #jurassic #jurassicpark #africa #arthropod #morocco #trilobite

The opening of the American Kennel Club’s Museum of the Dog is as much a ribbon-cutting as it is a chance for New York’s dog elite to mingle. In the bright, modern building – just a tennis ball’s throw from Grand Central Terminal – pure breeds belonging to the American Kennel Club’s top brass rub shoulders with celebrity pooches. In the early Eighties, the museum was located in the city but, lacking space and money, moved to St Louis, Missouri in 1986. Now, after 36 years it has returned to New York, with ambitions to attract ten times as many visitors as it had in St Louis. But will it appeal to the regular Rex owner, or only to those who know their Schnauzers from their Shih Tzus? Follow the link in our bio to find out. I’m a little late posting! We visiting the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum! The Spruce Goose took the show for us! I had no idea about this plane and the fact that it was made out of wood! I also got to see an old family friend. She hasn’t seen me since I was probably 8 or maybe 9 when I lived in Kansas. I always make it a point to try and see people that have been a part of my family in one way or another when I travel. I love hearing old stories or creating new memories of them! Do you try to reconnect with people when you are in the same area? #homeschoolmom #thisishomeschool #sprucegoose #aviation #space #boymom #museums at Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum

This diary from Kings Mountain native, Hazel Herndon Fryer, is full of her own stories from her experiences as a WWII Red Cross nurse. . This is the last page she wrote as she sailed home to the US at the end of the war. "And if someday my son or daughter or grandchildren should chance upon this scribbled book in some dark attic... let them see beneath these carelessly written words to what was really a war of terror which luckily escaped me personally but which was the end of everything for so many. Let them know that they are privileged to go on making Tomorrow's America the land we dream of today." . Join us this Saturday at 2 as local author, Chris Hartley, recounts the story of how WWII affected another Kings Mountain family. #storiesthatshapeus at Kings Mountain Historical Museum
