THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER
Have you ever seen this Twilight Zone episode (the original)? It's been a while but I love revisiting these sometimes.
The short synopsis is a woman by the name of Janet Tyler is undergoing plastic surgery to "fix" her face. She is undergoing her final and tenth allowed procedure which she prays changes her face the way she desires.
Her desire is not to be more beautiful, only normal, so she can be a part of society and "so people no longer scream when they look at her face".
The doctor and nurse to whom she speaks remain in the shadows. The staff expresses concern about whether the procedure will in fact work and what it will do to the woman if it is not successful.
She is told there is "another" place for "people like her".
When the bandages are finally removed, Janet shrieks when she learns the procedure was, again, a failure.
Except, she is, in fact, a classically attractive woman.
She leaves the hospital room in haste and the doctor and nurse then come out of the shadows with faces which are distorted.
Televisions blare propaganda throughout the hospital hallways about the need for conformity.
Janet is then met by a man in a room who also has more classical features and asks him why they were born "this way".
She is told she will be taken to a place with people "like her" and reminded of "a very old saying" which she is encouraged to remember, "Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder."
Be mindful of how you may not be honoring your own beauty and ingenuity.
Are you comparing yourself to a perceived standard that does not serve your own genius and vision?
Be mindful of the mind games that can play out and distort your perspective/perception, creating a shadow on your greatest light.
Nature loves originals.
