Crises are a part of life. They often trigger painful thoughts and feelings, which we often are ill-prepared to handle. Today’s post continues about the 4 steps for handling a crisis, adopted from the STOP exercise based on mindfulness from Russ Harris, 2009, www.actmadesimple.com Slow your breathing - mindfully observe it Take a note of your experience - what you are thinking, feeling and doing Open up for your feelings and thoughts without trying to control them or push them away Pursue your values Last weeks' post were about the following questions: 1)Would you benefit from asking for help or advice? 2) How can you use learnings from similar experiences? 3) Are there any small steps that you can take now to improve the situation? 4) If there is nothing you can do to improve the situation, could you consider using your time constructively by practicing acceptance while acting according to your values and engaging fully in the present moment? Today’s post is about: 5) You do not get to choose all the things that will happen in your life. Sometimes you can only choose how to act. Therefore, a useful question to ask is: Given this is the hand I’ve been dealt, what’s the best way to play with it? Drinking alcohol has always been a big part of my life. From as soon as I was able to steal it from my parents liquor cabinet, I was drinking. As a young adult devouring a whole bottle of wine, to myself before I went out was the norm. I used it as a security blanket, it helped me build false confidence that I believed I needed to converse with people. It was a go-to stress reliever when things were tough and I needed to sink-in and ignore. But also a tool for fun and a vice to connect with others. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not admitting I’m an alcoholic and I do have control over my drinking. But what I have come to notice in the last few years is my reliant relationship with alcohol. I’ve spent the last 2 years reading studying and working on myself and developing an awareness of who I really am. Plus investing time in analysing my health, mindset habits and emotional connections to food and booze. Recently I decided, with a friend, to give up alcohol for the foreseeable future. This is because I believe I can focus on my goals, keep my vision to the forefront and achieve more if I have a clear and intentional mind. Those of you who know me, will realise what a big commitment this is. My aim was to realise I don’t “need” alcohol and that in fact instead I can just choose it sometimes. I love who am and I know myself now better than I ever have my whole life. This picture represents a night out with friends, when I chose not to drink, something that I would have found almost impossible a few years ago. I had a wonderful time, I didn’t need my security blanket to talk to people, or to be funny or to be open and honest.
