The Chinese 19th Route Army in a defensive position during the Shanghai (January 28th) Incident. The Shanghai Incident occurred from January 28th to March 3rd, 1932 and was an armed conflict between the Republic of China and the Japanese Empire. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Following the Mukden Incident in September of 1931, Japan invaded and conquered the Chinese province of Manchuria from September 1931 to February 1932, however Japanese territorial ambitions extended far further into China, reaching all the way down to Shanghai (Where Japan had extraterritorial rights) and beyond. Anti-Japanese sentiment ran high in China, and after 5 Japanese Buddhist monks were attacked in Shanghai by an agitated group of Chinese men, Japanese-Chinese relations got rapidly worse and worse than they were, until armed conflict broke out in Shanghai on January 28th, 1932. Bloody fighting would rage until a ceasefire was declared on March 3rd. In the agreement, Shanghai was demilitarised, however this was little compensation for the 4000 Japanese and 3000 Chinese dead, along with 18,000 further casualties between the two countries.
