Sorry about the long story, but might be worth reading for some people. Maybe someone could avoid facing the same disaster I did once. :) I have 12511 photos in my lightroom catalog. But if you check the folders there is something strange. I did have camera in 2014 and 2015. Actually I photographed during those years about as much as I did 2017 and 2018. Also the amount of photographs I took 2012 and 2013 was around 1500-2000 in both years.
So I should have photographs in lightroom somewhere in the range of 25000-30000. Yet I don't have and here is why.
In 2016 there was a day I had to learn the hard way that your computer AND backup systems can fail at the same time. After hard work I could only recover 951 photographs out of the failed devices.
I try to forget what photos I lost, but for example 2014 I was on a 5000km+ road trip with my wife through 8 european countries and I do remember taking 'a couple of photographs'. I'm glad that I have a bad memory and don't remember most of the things I had photographed during those years.
So my advice is that even though you would have a backup system, remember to check from time to time that it is in good health. And if you have a backup of a backup, remember that sometimes even that is not enough. I had RAID 1 running on computer and a couple of external drives with both having copies of my data at the time and still... If you don't have a backup system at all, start getting something up NOW. If you don't have the knowledge, consult someone with experience.
Oh by the way, does anyone else have similar experiences? :D
