So many items we generally perceive as plastic-free are often in fact coated or partly comprised of one kind of plastic or other, but even this fact surprised us. Check out @plasticpollutes for more tips and facts on plastic and how to remove it from your life. ・・・ Did you know that standard cash register receipts are coated with BPA? 😲
Recent studies show that this BPA can come off on people’s hands and can be absorbed through the skin. Studies also show that BPA levels in the bodies of cashiers were found to be significantly higher than in the general population because of their constant handling of BPA-coated receipts.
To make matters worse, wet hands dramatically increase the absorption rate of the BPA. And cashiers often have wet hands, because they’re constantly either using hand sanitizer or handling produce.
But this isn't just a problem for cashiers--it is a problem for customers, too. Any time BPA-coated receipts are handled, the powder comes off on our hands and that powder can be transferred to our food and ingested.
According to professionals, cash register receipts are one of the most significant sources of BPA exposure. And if you aren't familiar with the health effects of BPA, here's a quote from Doctor Fred vom Saal, one of the first people to speak out about BPA over a decade ago: “The link between BPA exposure and human disease is much stronger now than it was 10 years ago. We now have solid evidence for BPA exposure driving things like obesity, diabetes, heart disease and neurobehavioural problems. In one recent study, we have evidence of BPA in people causing the deaths of fetuses during in vitro fertilization … BPA exposure results in the ovary producing less estrogen.” Learn more in Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie's 'Slow Death By Rubber Duck: How the Toxicity of Everyday Life Affects Our Health'. #plasticpollutes #plasticispoison #plastickills #plasticistoxic at West Barnstable, Massachusetts
