-1997: The race was delayed until Monday due to bad weather. They only drove 15 laps before it started raining again postponing it to Tuesday. Tony Stewart led Luyendyk after he jumped his the previous day trying the starts. Luyendyk passed Stewart and he began to set the lead. Stewart and Goodyear passed Arie on lap 175, Arie passed them back and he moved into the lead. Luyendyk would hold on to win his 2nd 500.
-1998: the first half of the race was a fight between Boat, Ray and Stewart. Both Boat and Luyendyk retired with mechanicals. Cheever now led the race infront of Lazier. Lazier would give him some trouble but it wasn't enough, Cheever would win his first Indy 500.
-1999: Luyendyk led again from pole position, he battled throughout the half of the field while fight in with Ray. Brack joined the party when he overtook Ray for the lead. The battle continued but Brack won in the end, winning the 500.
2000: Greg Ray took pole position infront of Montoya, Ray led the first 30 minutes of the race. Montoya however fought back and took over the lead. Montoya passed Ray and set off into the distance dominating the whole race. This would be Montoya's first out of 2 500 wins.
-2001: the race started with mutiple yellows after pole sitter Scott Sharp crashed. The track was tricky and cars struggled to get their tyres onto temperature. The race was led by Michael Andretti until John Herb crashed into turn 1. The crash triggered a yellow flag, Andretti was leading currently infront of De Ferran and Castroneves. Helio took the lead when Andretti pitted. The race was red flagged because of the weather and would be restarted after a 17 minute red flag. Helio now led Buhl who tried everything to pass Helio, he failed miserably when he crashed while attacking him. Helio beat teammate de Ferran by 0.5 seconds winning his first 500. at Indianapolis Motor Speedway
