A pilgrim reads his prayer book outside the Church of Biete Medhane Alem, in Lalibela. One of the eleven monolithic rock hewn churches built in Lalibela around the late 12th or early 13th century, it is still a place of pilgrimage for many of Ethiopia’s Orthodox Christians. Carved both internally and externally from the rock in which it stands, the churches are the focus of multiple conservation and restoration efforts, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
