Hey you! Stop putting chemicals on your skin!
If you’ve been following, this is the fourth and final post on the top twelve nasty chemicals found in everyday cosmetics and beauty products. I think it’s important for everyone to know the effects of what they put on their body, and be able to weigh the risk and reward of using said products. Shiny hair? Yeah, maybe, but consider the damage to your skin, brain, liver, and bloodstream, as well as effects on children, aquatic life, and the environment at large. I would never tell anyone what to do with their body, but I will continue to provide as much information as I can to make people as healthy as they can be. Without further ado, here are the last three chemicals to watch out for in your consumer products.
Siloxanes, including cyclotetrasiloxane, cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasiloxane, and cyclomethicone. These silicone based compounds are widely used in hair products, moisturizers, deodorants, and facial treatments. They soften, smoothen, and moisten, as well as making hair products dry more quickly. High doses in lab tests (or long term use) have been shown to cause uterine tumours, as well as having other negative effects on immune and reproductive functions. They are labelled as a possible endocrine disruptor (messes with your hormones), as well as being toxic to marine life, persistent (doesn’t break down easily in the environment), and bioaccumulates. There are currently no restrictions on the use of siloxanes in Canada.
